This is a medal won by J. McKenzie of the Warrnambool Fire Brigade at a Camperdown competition in 1899. A Warrnambool Fire Brigade was first established in 1859 but it lapsed and another Fire Brigade was formed in 1863. This Brigade prospered and entered in, and won many Fire Brigade demonstrations and competitions which were particularly popular in the late 19th century and early 20th century. No information has been found on J. McKenzieThis medal is of considerable interest as a memento of the Warrnambool Fire Brigade in 1899 and of its successes in competitions against other Victorian Fire Brigades.This circular silver coloured light metal medal features an eight petal shaped centrepiece inserted into an outer circle with text on both obverse and reverse. This spirometer, built by Geoffrey Kaye for demonstration purposes, features a large, rectangular panel of wood with a wooden needle and a dial numbered from 000 to 3000 in increments of 100, which would have measured a patient's lung capacity as they breathed into a tube which is no longer present. The panel is attached to a wooden frame, which also supports a red Stenco brand pulley attached to a metal canister and a counterweight. There are two taps on the bottom of the canister. In 1980, the original week long session of planned activities to celebrate White Cane Day was jettisoned for displays and presentations in the new City Square.
