Major General C H Brand was born in Ipswich Qld on the 4 September 1873. he fought in both the South African war and WW1. He commanded the 3rd Battalion at Gallipoli and the 6th Brigade in 1915-16 and the 4th Brigade in 1916-18 in France. he retired after 37 years of Service and was elected a senator for the United Party in 1935, stepping down in 1947. Embroidered silk postcards gained popularity during and after World War I, particularly in France. These cards were often hand-embroidered on strips of silk mesh, and then mounted on postcards. A cottage industry arose around 1915 to meet the demand, with women working in their homes to produce the embroidery. Lance Corporal Albert Francis Nye was the son of James and Mary Ann Nye of Pakenham Upper. Albert enlisted in 1916 and served in France. The 59th Battalion was an infantry battalion of the Australian Army. Initially raised for service during World War I, the battalion fought on the Western Front in France and Belgium between 1916 and 1918, before being disbanded in 1919. In 1921, it was re-raised as a part-time unit of the Militia in Victoria. They remained in existence until 1942 when, due to a manpower shortage in the Australian economy, the decision was made to amalgamate the battalion with the 58th Battalion to form the 58th/59th Battalion. Together they remained linked throughout World War II, serving in New Guinea and Bougainville in 1943–1945.
