Dress, Jacket, 1960s-70s
This ensemble would have been worn early in the second half of the 20th century. It would have been worn on special occasions rather than for everyday wear and would perhaps have been worn with a hat, gloves and high heels. This ensemble is retained as an example of a women’s outfit worn in the 1960s and 70s. It will be useful for display. This is a cotton wove dress and jacket in matching material. The pattern has bands width-ways and is in grey, brown and cream colouring. The dress is sleeveless with a rounded neckline and a zip at the back. The skirt section is slightly flared. The jacket has short sleeves and finishes at the waistline. The jacket has four buttons and a small collar.ladies fashions -

Book - Tatting craft book, Paragon Art Needlecraft Pty Ltd, Tatting Designs, circa 1940's
Tatting is a form of knotted lace making using thread and a small shuttle. Twisted threads are tied around or through small, pointed shuttles that can be made of bone, mother of pearl, tortoise shell, steel or plastic. This produces a stable, strong lace using simple knots of two half hitches to make rings and chains embellished with picots. The origins of tatting are not clear but early versions of decorative knotting were used by the Egyptians on their ceremonial dress. Tatting also has elements of fishermen's net making techniques and the decorative knotting that was practiced by aristocratic women from the 15th century. Tatting, as we know it today, emerged in the first half of the 19th century. The new availability of mercerised thread from 1835 encouraged a burgeoning of lace crafts of all sorts. It was known in Italy as "occhi" and in France as "la frivolite". It looks fragile but is both strong and durable. An article in a column named "Wives and Daughters" published in the Star newspaper in May 1910 describes the durability of tatting lace - "there is edging and insertion still in existence that have outworn two sets of pillow slips." In the 19th century and well into the 20th century, tatting was used like crochet and knitted lace for decorative edgings, collars, doylies, tray cloths etc. At first, different tatting patterns were passed along by word of mouth from person to person, however in time, patterns regularly appeared in newspapers and magazines well into the 1950's. Paragon knitting, crochet and tatting books have been distributed throughout Australia since the 1930's, originally by "Paragon Art Needlework Pty Ltd" of Sydney, N.S.W. From 1946 these books were designed and printed in Australia from patterns provided by British and Australian thread companies. Consequently these patterns may also appear in similar British and American publications. Paragon Book No. 104 is an instruction book designed for the "beginner" whilst Paragon book No. 105 is designed for the more experienced tatter. The layout of these books was typical of the 1940s period when paper was in short supply. Most of the pattern books were approximately 18 cms wide by 24 cms high and some were smaller at about 13cm by 21 cms. The type used was small (about four lines of text per centimetre) which was difficult to read. This item is an excellent example of a needle work pattern book available to women in the 1940's in Australia.A soft covered, 16 page instruction book titled "Tatting Designs". It has black and white photographs and detailed patterns for tatted doilies, a tray mat, a chairback and arm rests, a cheval set, a luncheon set, collars and edgings for an underskirt, gloves and handkerchief. It is published by Paragon Art Needlecraft of Sydney.Front cover - "Paragon's No 105" "PRICE 1/3" "Tatting Designs" "Household Linens * Personal Wear" Plus a stylized drawing of a deerflagstaff hill maritime museum and village, great ocean road, warrnambool, shipwreck coast, tatting book, tatting patterns, craft, handiwork, handcraft, needlework, shuttle -

Painting - John Halfey, c.1882
John Halfey (1825-89) was born in Southport, Lancashire and migrated to Victoria in 1852. After finding gold at Sandhurst, and representing the latter in the Victorian Parliament, he moved to Melbourne to engage in various commercial pursuits, including directorships of insurance, mining and banking companies. A resident of Kew from the late 1850s, he was known for the hospitality provided at his house Ordsall (later Southesk) in Cotham Road. On 14 December 1860, Halfey chaired a public meeting calling for separation from the Boroondara Roads Board, which led, four days later, to the proclamation of Kew as a separate municipality. He was elected to the Council in 1861, replacing Cr. Oswin, and subsequently served as the second Chairman of the Municipality in 1862-1863. John Halfey became a trustee of Holy Trinity Church in Bulleen Road (now High Street) in 1862. He was to resign from Council after four years in 1865. Twenty-four years later in January 1889, he died aged 63 from a seizure, at his rooms at the Herald Office. He was interred in the Boroondara General Cemetery where his monument is the tallest in the Cemetery. Donated by Eileen Grigg, 2017Small, full-length portrait of John Halfey in an original gilded frame. The artist depicts him formally dressed in a frock coat beside an open window. He is shown holding a document or perhaps a pair of gloves. In the 1960's, the RVIB approached engineer George Glover to produce equipment to allow blind people to shoot, based upon that made available at St Dunstan's Hospital in the UK. The rifle range opened in February 1966 at the rear of St Kilda Road with 30 members, and soon became involved in matches with sighted rifle clubs in the area. Kiewa Valley Historical Society
Hook Button, late 1800's to mid 1900's
This item and its use and design spans the 1800's to early 1900's both in its fashion and application requirements. The genteel factor must be made when applying it to the Kiewa Valley. The evolution of general clothing and apparel has moved from solid(long lasting) and sometimes expensive material and fasteners to a cheaper and more "throw away" fashion of sometimes monthly change in the later 1900's to 2000's.The significance of this item to a rural setting such as the Kiewa Valley not only points to an integration of "modern" fashion in semi remote rural Australian environments but also the limited connections to "high" fashion through magazines and audible (radio) and visual (cinema) advertising. It also "spotlights" the differences between the European and British social networking and lack of interaction between towns and counties to the "Australian" levels of interactions between rural and city environments. Although physical distances in Australia, during this period (1800's to early 1900's) was a retarding factor in the diffusion of the latest fashion apparel it was not as noticeable as when the global communication and the physical travel abilities were "exploded" in the latter 1900's. This shift towards "the smaller" globe scenario has overcome the physical distances that were so apparent in the previous century. This silver button/glove hook was based on late 1800's designs when buttons became more integrated and fashionable than "tie up" laces. This was more so in genteel fashion. The main hook extension from the "pronged" hand piece has been constructed in a way that allows for easy replacement by either longer or shorter hooks.costume accessories, footwear, shoes and boots with buttons, gloves, costume -
