Denis Gibbons (1937 – 2011) Trained with the Australian Army, before travelling to Vietnam in January 1966, Denis stayed with the 1st Australian Task Force in Nui Dat working as a photographer. For almost five years Gibbons toured with nine Australian infantry battalions, posting compelling war images from within many combat zones before being flown out in late November 1970 after sustaining injuries. The images held within the National Vietnam Veterans Museum make up the Gibbons Collection. Harriet Wilson was the wife of William Wilson. The Wilsons were members of Linton's Methodist congregation. The original of this photograph of Mrs Wilson is in an album donated by Mrs Stella Surman (album in Box 13. Page 5, lower right). A pencil inscription next to the photograph reads "Burnt to death". Notes with the copy of the photograph in the Wilson family file say that Mrs Wilson smoked a pipe, set her clothes alight and died in the resulting fire. Mrs Wilson died on New Year's Day, 1900. A grid has been drawn across the top with Romanian letters written within the cells.Mayday Hills Asylum was one of the three largest psychiatric hospitals in Victoria, and played an important role in the treatment of mental health illnesses from its establishment in 1867 to its closure in 1995. As part of prescribed treatment, many patients participated in craft activities were they were able to create an array of objects. This brush & comb set was used by Mrs Rooks who lived in Mt. Beauty between 19 and 2 . It is typical of the sets that adorned dressing tables in the 1950s and 1960s. Could be part of a larger vanity set. Handle on brush indicates it is a ladies brush and not a mans. Today these types of items are becoming more collectible .Historic, & social asignificance. As it is the only one in our collection it also has good interpretive capacity as it shows the types dresser sets or vanity set used for womens personal attirement during the 1950's. Dr Tony Krins found this vial in a desk drawer when purchasing the Surrey Hills practice of Dr Bill Vorath in 1980. Horsehair was, and still is, a popular material for sutures.
