The Ordnance QF 18-pounder was the standard British field gun of the First World War and was used by both British and Commonwealth Forces. It was horse drawn until the army replaced horses with motor vehicles in the 1930s. The gun was still in use with the Australian Army in the early days of WW2 until replaced by more modern 25 pounder gun/howitzers. The horse-drawn dray was an early transport vehicle used for heavy loads of timber or related farming goods. Designed in the early 18th and 19th centuries, these items found within the Churchill Island heritage collection were used throughout the private ownership periods of the Island.Brown wooden vechicle with leather seating fixed within the carriage for driver and passengers. Dray features exposed and unpainted wooden shafts with large spoked wheels on a single axle. Shows Glenferrie Road, near Linda St looking south, c1915 prior to the construction of the Railway overpass at Glenferrie Railway Station with H class tram 58 in the view. The tram line was constructed in 1913. It would appear that the level crossing gates are closed in the photograph. The building on the right-hand side by the horse-drawn cart was an ANZ bank until 2021. The closer building, a theatre (The Palace) has since been demolished and is now a Coles Supermarket. The level crossing was replaced with an overbridge in April 1916. The church in the background is the Immaculate Conception Church, without the spires - built after WW1.
