This image is one from a series of portraits taken by Rob Elliott to record the character of the Border District through the faces if its identities. Des Martin lived all his life in Wodonga, except for his years of service during World War Two. He was raised on the family property Aherlo in the Huon Creek Valley. In 1937 he joined the 8th Light Horse Regiment but in May 1940 led his Wodonga Troop into the 2/2nd Australian Pioneer Battalion. This Battalion saw service in Syria, Java, New Guinea and Borneo. After the war, Des returned to Aherlo and his horses. He was granted permission by the Victorian Racing Club to participate as an amateur “gentleman” rider. He became the first president of the Victorian Amateur Riders Association and founded the Murray Valley Hunt Club. Des also played a major role in Australia entering an equestrian team in the Melbourne Olympics in 1956 and served as a steward at that event. Des also wrote several publications including “Australia Astride” in 1959, a history of the Albury Racing Club – a Century of Racing, and an historical novel “Many a Mile”. He collaborated with R. M. Williams to develop “Hoofs and Horns” to become a national publication. From 1969 to 1973, Des Martin also wrote a column for the Border Mail newspaper. He was also a member of the RSL for almost 50 years and held several committee positions during that time. Des Martin died on 12 April 1995.This is a portrait of a significant member of the Wodonga community who made an outstanding contribution as a farmer, soldier, horseman, author and member of the RSL and other community organisations.A black and white photograph of Des Martin in military uniform with his horse. The extensive fashion and design collection of the Kew Historical Society has been assembled over a number of decades. One subsection of this collection is shoes, designed and manufactured for Australian women by Australian and European designers. Many of the shoes, while often mass-produced, were generally constructed by skilled artisans using traditional shoe-making techniques. The shoes date from the 1890s to the 1980s. These shoes were owned, worn and donated to the collection by Annie McIntyre.The McIntyre Collection of clothing and clothing accessories forms one of the largest single donations to our Fashion & Design collection. It includes clothing and clothing accessories worn by four women in the Cohen and McIntyre families across three generations. The items worn by Melbourne architect, and Kew resident, Dione McIntyre date from the 1960s and 1970s, and include evening wear, day wear, hats and shoes. As Dione McIntyre often accompanied her husband, fellow architect Peter McIntyre, to formal events, there are a number of pieces of evening wear among the items. The McIntyre Collection also includes items worn by women of an earlier generation: by Lilian Cohen, Dione McIntyre's mother, and by her mother-in-law, the wife of the architect Robert McIntyre. At the other end of the chronological spectrum are a number of outfits belonging to, worn and donated by Annie McIntyre. These include outfits created by notable late 20th century Australian and/or international fashion designers. The McIntyre Collection is significant historically and artistically as it includes examples of design that demonstrate changing tastes in fashion over an 80-year period. The collection is also significant in that it includes the work of a large number of Melbourne designers from the 1960s to the 1990s. Black satin and velvet evening shoes, by Enrico Coveri. The shoes were purchased by Annie McIntyre and worn with her Martin Grant outfit in 1985 at her 21st birthday party. WW1 AIF Light Horse Saddle (Martin Balsarini's, a Chiltern Resident). The Great War 1914-1918.This saddle belonged to Martin Balsarini, a soldier in the AIF WW1 4th Light Horse Brigade and who was at the Charge Of Beersheba. Dark Rum coloured leather saddle issued to WW1 soldier Martin Balsarini 4th Light Horse AIF. Saddle has cast iron stirrups x 2 with brass adjustment buckles. There is a restored leather rations barrel attached to the rear of the saddle. The saddle underlay is made of canvas and felt. The Northern District School of Nursing opened in 1950 in to address the issues around nurse recruitment, training and education that had previously been hospital based. The residential school was to provide theoretical and in-house education and practical training over three years. The students would also receive practical hands-on training in the wards of associated hospitals. The Northern District School of Nursing operated from Lister House, Rowan Street, Bendigo. It was the first independent school of nursing in Victoria and continued until it closed in 1989. The book "The First of its Kind" was published in 2015. Printed in Bendigo by Bendigo Modern Press. These books originally belonged to James Martin of Beeac and have been passed on to his grandson, William James Wines, in 1938. The books were a gift to the Warrnambool and District Historical Society from Bill Wines and it is presumed that he was the recipient of the books in 1938. The Wine families were pioneer settlers in the Woodford area, and later in the Mailors Flat district (Job and Ellen Wines and Charles Wines). Bill Wines was noted for his lifetime interest in Warrnambool cycling and his recording of the history of the Melbourne to Warrnambool Cycling Classic (one day race).These four volumes are of antiquarian interest as examples of technical education books from the late 19th century. They are also of interest because they belonged to a member of the Wines family, Bill Wines, late of Warrnambool, and his grandfather before him, James Martin. These are four volumes of an encyclopedia on technical education. They have dark blue covers with leather binding on the spines and cover edges. The leather binding is partly torn and stained. Some of the inside binding is partly detached. Two of the volumes have colour plates at the beginning of the text and all have many black and white illustrations and drawings.
