This brace would be used to drill into timber. A drill bit would be inserted into one end of the brace and then placed on the timber where the hole is to be drilled. The other end of the brace would be placed against the user’s abdomen, with one hand holding the brace firmly then the free hand would be used to turn the centre of the brace and drill the hole. This type of drilling method was used prior to the use of the electric drill. This horse hide strop was traditionally used to sharpen and polish straight edged razors, although it could be used for kitchen knives or chisels. The metal loop was designed to be hung onto a nail or peg, and the person held onto the handle and pull the strop taut. The razor was sharpened by drawing the spine down along the strop, so no pressure placed on the blade. Once the razor reached the bottom of the strop, it was flipped and drawn upwards. This process required skill, although it could be done at a great speed. Keen Kut was an American brand that sold razors, strops, and safety brands. Double sided, two strips. A scythe is an agricultural hand tool that cuts grass and is used by making large sweeping motions through the crop. Eventually replaced by horse-drawn or motorised machinery, they are occasionally still used as they are inexpensive and efficient. There are different types of scythes with larger or smaller blades. This particular scythe was manufactured by W.A Tyzack & Co. Ltd. Set up by William Tyzack in the early 1800s in Sheffield, United Kingdom, they grew into a larger manufactory specialising in agricultural tools. Adding the ‘Horseman’ brand to their trademark in 1948, they expanded dramatically and exported throughout the Commonwealth.Donated by Wilfred Dungan on behalf of the Dungan family Collection originally used on the property of the late Dr Rae Dungan in Falls Creek Rd Olinda, purchased in the late 1930s from Olinda pioneers Harry and Minnie Holden. Also on the property of late May Farndon of Farndon’s and Falls Rd Mt Dandenong – aunt of Dr Rae William Dungan and also an early pioneer. Family holidays and weekends involved use of these sorts of farm implements plus working with horses. Post-war, the Olinda hand tools and machinery moved to the Shady Creek, Nilma North area where bush, pasture and cows had replaced the Olinda property. Wilfred well remembers being on one end of the crosscut saws cutting fence posts, logs and timber under “the tireless and vocal instruction” of a red headed local Darnum Rd legend called Harry Collyer. “He drove an old Rugby car and nearly pulled me through the logs with every cut!” Cast steel blade. A Sickle is an agricultural hand tool used for harvesting or reaping grain crops using the sharp blade in a swinging or hacking motion. It was also used for cutting back forage and other plant growth. They have been used since early Iron Age times and many examples have been found in the Middle East dating back 18,000 to 8,000 BC. This is a bagging hook – a type of larger and heavier sickle used mainly for harvesting of grain. It continued to be used after industrialisation and the implementation of the mechanical reaper. This mallet has a cylindrical head and would have been used to guide chisels for woodworking. The hammer end has a larger surface area than oblong mallets and gives greater control with less force. Wooden mallets don’t damage the metal head of the chisel as would an iron hammer. This hand drill was colloquially called an ‘egg beater drill’ due to its method of operation, and was aesthetically similar in appearance to the ‘breast drill’, with the former having a rounded handle instead of a concave bracing surface. Originally designed for drilling into metal, its gears allowed for higher rotation speeds and finer accuracy. This drill was probably manufactured in the 1960s by German company BECON. A pelvimeter is used in obstetrics for measurement of the female pelvis, with the aim of attempting to determine whether there will be any potential issues with a vaginal birth. This pelvimeter is similar in style to Martin's pelvimeter (see Aesculapius). This instrument was included with other obstetric instruments, mostly destructive instruments, given to RANZCOG from Box Hill Hospital labour ward in February- March 1998. The maternity service at Box Hill Hospital combined with St Geroge's Hospital in Kew to be known as Birralee Maternity Service. Eupnine Vernade was a product used in the early 20th century for the treatment of bronchitis, asthma, emphysema and bronchiectasis adjuvant in the treatment of sequaelae of influenza. It contained 10% caffeine iodide, and "exerts an intense action on the respiratory tract, stimulating the bronchial secretion and facilitating expectoration. It regulates and strengthens the heart, contracts the blood vessels of the splanchnic area, but dilates those of the heart and lung. It "also exerts a powerful diuretic action, thus diminishing the strain on the heart." There is a short metal tube alongside the proximal flange, attached to the upper section of the flange, which is turned inwards and down with a small bulb on the end. Plastic or rubber tubing can be attached to this bulb. There is a smaller rounded flange at the distal end of the shaft.
