ew Primary School is the oldest school in Kew and was established on November 1, 1870. It predates the commencement of State education with its genesis lying in the year the colony was founded, namely, 1851. Nicholas Fenwick was recognized as the founder of Kew when he purchased an area of 122 acres (Lot 87) on which Kew Primary School now stands.Grade 4, Kew State School, 1924. The Northern District School of Nursing opened in 1950 in to address the issues around nurse recruitment, training and education that had previously been hospital based. The residential school was to provide theoretical and in-house education and practical training over three years. The students would also receive practical hands-on training in the wards of associated hospitals. The Northern District School of Nursing operated from Lister House, Rowan Street, Bendigo. On 24th September 1888 a wooden state school opened on land purchased on the north west corner of Whitehorse and Mitcham Roads. In 1890 a contract was let for the construction of a one-room brick school house on that site. By 1907 student numbers had risen to 120 so the Church of Christ Hall was leased for 10/- a week. By 1922 cracks had appeared, plaster had fallen in the school and both the Brittania Street Scout Hall and the Methodist Church has been leased for classrooms. The smaller copy of the photograph in Box 22 was donated in 2014 by Peter Stapleton. A laminated, larger copy of this photograph is also in Box 22 (also has registration number 2015-07). A third copy of the photo is in the 'Linton State School - Photos' file. It is understood the laminated copy was donated by Graeme McGregor, one of the boys pictured, whose father worked in Linton for the railways. Some pupils in the laminated photo have been identified - names are on a typed slip of paper which is attached to the back of the copy. The Kew Festival was initiated in 1974 by Cr Gerry Petrie. At each festival, members of the Society would display items, typically from the collection. Typically, exhibitions were themed. While they were mostly held at what was to become known as the Phyllis Hore Room of the Kew Library, some exhibitions were held in the Kew Civic Offices or Kew Civic Hall (from1987 Kew Library).Illustrations of schools in Kew attached to a display board, viewed by a member of the public. Rae's School was opened on the 22nd April 1861, with 22 students. Mr. John Rae was the Headmaster. By 1919, it was an adjunct of the Violet Street State School.Sepia coloured postcard . Image on front shows twenty-eight male and female students and two young male teachers seated at front. Sign in front of students reads: Central School, Rae's Hill, Form E. 9th February 1919. Students are standing in front of a brick building, with verandah immediately behind them. On back 'Post Card, correspondence and address only'. Kodak printed around space for stamp. Text donated with the photo relates to Sir John Michael Higgins (1862-1937) a metallurgist, government adviser and company director who attended Rae's School, Sandhurst and then Bendigo High School.
