Photograph - St Kilda Junction cable tram conversion, C J Frazer, late Dec. 1925
The photo shows St Kilda Junction, shortly after the introduction of electric trams on temporary track replacing cable trams in St Kilda Road. Cable trams ceased on 26-12-1925 with electric services commencing on Sunday 27-12-1925. There are passengers on the tram. The conductor of W class tram 274 with the destination of Melbourne is holding the pole while it rounds the curve, and in the background is W class tram 386 (St Kilda Beach). A cable tram replacement bus, Reg No. 86053, with the destination of Brighton Rd is passing a policeman on point duty. Various construction equipment and materials can be seen as well as a work gang in St Kilda road, dismantling the cable tram track or constructing new permanent track. Photograph by Ron Hood shows the SECV welding truck at the Ballarat Lydiard St level crossing with No. 43 passing on its way to Lydiard St North, December 1970. The welding truck was provided with a trolley pole to power the equipment in order to weld or repair rail joints. Photo taken from the Provincial Hotel. Has the level crossing, Kennedy Murray General Carriers and the Ballarat Goods shed in the view. In the far distance is a SECV truck. Photograph - W2 tram 570 in Swanston St, 1930-31
Photograph looks southward along Swanston St as intending passengers stand on the safety zone at Bourke St. W2 570 with destination "Elsternwick, route 1" has just departed the safety zone and obscures another W2 travelling in the opposite direction. The street is busy with pedestrians and motor cars and new traffic lights (1928-29) control the intersection. The Leviathan Department Store can be seen to the right and workmen's ladders and equipment can bee seen far left. W2 570 was built in 1929 and fitted with newly adopted route number boxes. Photograph from an original postcard - Southern Cross Series No. 143. of the intersection of Sturt and Lydiard St., 1930, looking south with two ESCo trams and the buildings at the intersection. Note the cab stand building on Lydiard St South. Many motor cars in the photo. ESCo trams - one crossing Lydiard St has a "Vote No" sign on it. The one in Lydiard Street has a "Pay as you leave" sign and a "Sunshine Biscuits Advertisements". The closest tram is No. 14, the number under the destination sign. Buildings in the view are the Bank of Australasia, Commonwealth Bank, Cooke & Co Auctioneer, a sign saying "Vai Purdue"? National Mutual Building and Craigs Hotel. The tram crossing Lydiard St has 6 windows - possibly tram No. 9 or 7. There a lot of switches or equipment on the centre pole by the tram with a section insulator in the overhead.
