The family Herald Supplements were advertised as "the favourite ladies' magazine, a pioneer of penny novels with one complete novel in each issue" It was issued every Monday and cost one penny. These are Volumes LX1; XX11; LX; L11 and L11. The Family Herald was a weekly domestic magazine from 1843 - 1949. Launched by George Biggs in 1842, it was re-established in May 1843 with James Elishama Smith and mechanised printing.Women’s magazines increased in popularity throughout the 1800s as printing technology advanced and consumerism grew. In the latter half of the 1880s and 1890s, magazine publication and circulation became less expensive and more accessible.These volumes are typical of the popular magazines designed especially for women. John Gillan Mundy owned this book. Miss Margaret Jane Gillan died 22.11.1941, Orbost at the Jarrahmond residence of her niece, Mrs Jack Mundy. She was the daughter of James Gillan and Margaret Munro. Miss Gillan was an active member of the Orbost branch of the Presbyterian Women's Missionary Union. She spent three years in the New Hebrides where she engaged in missionary work. (info. The Knight's, who had a general store in Gembrook, later bought it and put his sister and brother in law, Tom and Mary Fairbridge, in as managers and was run as a sub branch of the Gembrook store. No background information about the roadworks referred to in this plan has been found. The portion of land referred to as 'Cosgroves' in this plan is located close to the present day Darley Park Recreation Park in Darley, near Bacchus Marsh. The land indicated appears to be close to the corner of Grey Street and Gisborne Road. The Downing family lived in Linton for two periods - the first, from about 1902 to 1907, and the second from about 1908 to 1910. Thomas Frederick Downing, born 1865, worked from 1890 as a fireman with the Victorian Railways. Five of the seven Downing children became teachers. Traditionally the Ballarat School of Mines has fielded a strong Australian Rules Foootball team. This team includes Danny Frawley. Frawley went on to play and coach Australian Rules Football at the highest level. He was the longest serving captain of the St Kilda Football Club and enjoyed a career from 1984–1995. Bendigo Advertiser ''The way we were'' from 2000. Watering hole: the Queen's Arms Hotel was built by James Hamilton in Russell Street, Quarry Hill, in 1872 when Quarry Hill was sparsely populated. Within a year there was a regular omnibus service from this hotel to the centre of Sandhurst. A veranda was added later. The hotel architects were a mining engineer Robert Moffat, who spent three years in partnership with Joseph Brady in the early 1870s, meeting the needs of the mining industry. It produced coal gas for the community until it was liquidated and delisted as a company in 1959. 2. The Colonial Gas Association was incorporated in 1888, selling shares for 5pounds and 10 pounds. It was originally formed in London with the aim of raising investment capital for the construction and maintenance of gas works across the cities and towns of Australia and New Zealand.
