He was President of the Victoria and Tasmania Conference in 1897, President of the Wesleyan Conference in 1897, President of the General Conference in 1907. Awarded the degree of Doctor of Divinity by Queen's University, Toronto. Fellow of the Linnaean Society. Rev William Butters (1810 - 1887). Born Hibbaldstone, Lincolnshire on 24 January 1810. Entered the Wesleyan ministry in 1833 and sent as a missionary to Van Dieman's Land. Worked with convicts at Port Arthur, then served at Hobart, Ross and Launceston. In 1850 he was appointed to Melbourne. His health failed during the unprecedented difficulties initiated by the discovery of gold in 1851. Appointed to Adelaide 1855 - 1862. returned to Victoria in 1862, but his health broke down completely and he returned to England in 1863 and became a supernumerary. A founder of the Wesleyan Mission Carlton. President of the Australasian Conference in 1858. William Butters lived for 24 years in the London (Brixton) circuit before dying suddenly on 10 October 1887.B & W waist length printed etching of Rev. James Legge was born of Scots parentage at Dunolly, Victoria on 2 July 1873. He was educated at Scotch College Melbourne, and at the University of Melbourne. He worked as a teacher before starting the Theological course at Ormond College. He completed his theological training in 1902, and was appointed by the Home Mission Committee to the parish of Boort, where at Durham Ox he was ordained and inducted in May 1903. He married Susan Ison at the Collins St. Independent Church on 11 September 1907. Legge was called to Clunes (1907), Preston (1917), Mildura (1920), Dandenong (1924), and Kew (1926). Demitted 1942. Rev. Francis Robert Muter Wilson was born in 1832 near Hamilton, Lanarkshire, Scotland. He entered Edinburgh University in 1848 and started theological studies in 1852 at New College Edinburgh. He completed theological studies in 1856 and arrived in Melbourne in September 1857. He briefly preached to a small congregation at Brighton, and then early in 1858 he supplied the pulpit of Dr. McKay in Sydney. Later in 1858 he received a call to Camperdown and was ordained there in December 1858. Married Lillie Tait in Geelong in April 1861. Moderator of the Presbyterian Church of Victoria in 1875. Called to Kew in 1877 and served there until he was demitted in 1898. Convenor of the Business Committee of Assembly. He was ordained in 1898 and called to Kew Presbyterian Church. In 1903 he took his M.A. degree. In 1912 he left Kew and was appointed Neil Walter Black Lecturer at Ormond College Theological Hall. Graduated Bachelor of Divinity and also gained a Diploma of Education. Convenor Home Missions Committee until 1923. Superintendent of Group Mission from 1923. Joseph Ringland Anderson was born in Killylea, Ulster, Ireland in March 1854. At the age of 18 he joined the Presbyterian Church at Killylea by profession of faith. He studied at Queen's College, Galway, and graduated M.A. He then studied Theology at the General Assembly's Theological Hall, Belfast. In 1881 he decided to emigrate to Australia, and completed his theological education at Ormond College, Melbourne. He was ordained in 1882 and inducted into the Presbyterian Church at Penshurst, Victoria. While at Penshurst he married Annie Love Elder. He was called to Lilydale in 1893, to Beechworth in 1902, to North Carlton in 1907 and 1913, was inducted into the Kew Presbyterian Church. Retired and demitted 1926. William Edward Watkins was born at Carlton, Victoria on 18 June 1887. He entered the Theological Hall, Ormond College, in 1922 and completed his course in 1924. He was ordained and inducted at Collingwood in 1924. In 1925 he was assistant to the Rev. John Barnaby in the Group Mission, which included the churches of Fitzroy and Collingwood. He was called to St. John's Ballarat in 1927, South Melbourne in 1930, St. David's Geelong in 1936, Kew Presbyterian in 1942 and Wallan in 1950. Rev. Peter Mackie was born in Edinburgh, Scotland on 13 August 1929. He was educated in Scotland. After spending 2 years in compulsory military service he entered Edinburgh University, graduating Master of Arts. His theological education was at New College, Edinburgh. After qualifying, he spent two years in Leith as assistant to the Rev. David Easton. In 1957 he married Elizabeth Dowling, an Australian. In 1961 Peter Mackie with his wife and 2 children came to Australia. In 1962 he was inducted into the Charge of Bamawm-Lockington, near Echuca. In 1965 he was called to Kew.
