Members of the Eltham District Historical Society transfer collection items from storage into their new home. Previously occupied by the Parks and Environment Department of Nillumbik Shire Council (L-R: Mark Gillham, Margaret Ball Vice President, Sue Law Immediate Past President, Harry Gilham President) Nillumbik Shire Council Commissioner Vin Heffernan (1996-97) worked with Harry Gilham to obtain use of the former Eltham Shire Parks and Gardens office at 728 Main Road for use by the Society. Harry as a younger man had played in the scrum for Heidelberg Football Club along with Vin's brother who was on the wing. Emil William (Mon) Motschall lived at Panton Hill all his life and married Marjorie Smith, also a local. In 1969, he was awarded the British Empire Medal for services to the local Fire Brigade and was involved with other local organisations. Marjorie wrote two chapters in Alan Marshall's book "Pioneers and Painters" and wrote a history of Panton Hill. The Marysville Theatre was located in Murchison Street. The building was originally built in 1932 by local builder Harold Cuzens for Jim Wallace. The solid concrete building was used as a Theatre from 1932 to 1970. The building was then purchased by The Darmody Family and was used as an Arts and Crafts Centre for two years from 1975. The building was then purchased by Norman and Rosemary Fiske in 1977 and converted into a restaurant called The Pumpernickel.
