The Rechabite movement began in Salford England. In 1861 the first Independent order of Rechabites Friendly Society, Salford Unity, was opened in Bendigo to be called “Star of Bendigo” Tent. It was registered as Number 5 making it one of the first in Victoria. They worked with the Total Abstinence Society to organize lectures and social events designed to prove that entertainment and fun could be had without alcohol. The Northern District School of Nursing opened in 1950 in to address the issues around nurse recruitment, training and education that had previously been hospital based. The residential school was to provide theoretical and in-house education and practical training over three years. The students would also receive practical hands-on training in the wards of associated hospitals. The Northern District School of Nursing operated from Lister House, Rowan Street, Bendigo. It includes a photograph of former executive officer of the Bendigo Base Hospital Mr. Norm Phillips in the foyer of the Northern District School of Nursing. The plaque was to honor the school's foundation Dean, Nancy Winifred Long MBE. Mr. Phillips was the original acting secretary and knew Miss Long for 36 years.
