Mrs Nesta Drew is a longtime resident of Tawonga having operated a dairy farm with her family on the Kiewa Valley Highway in Tawonga. She grew up in the area and attending local schools and raised her own family there, until selling up the family home and moving into an aged care facility in recent years. Some of her family still reside in the local area. Mrs Drew is a well known community figure in the Tawonga area with links to many social and family groups. She has a very strong historical connection to Tawonga and has been a reliable source of anecdotal local historical knowledge. From Left to Right: Margaret Watson, Hugh Brown, Frank Anderson, Jean Brown, Mary Anderson, Bill Armstrong Zillah Jean Brown, known as Jean, was the granddaughter of a pioneer of the district, Mr Hugh Brown. Jean married Francis Anderson in October 1930. Hugh Brown (1830-1930), born in Ireland, arrived in Adelaide in 1855 and in the Mordialloc district in 1856. Mr Brown brought land in 1866 and built his farmhouse “Pine Vale” in 1870 near the site of the present Mordialloc Secondary College (then part of the property) and extended his property when the swampland was made open for selection in 1871. The property was a market garden and orchard. Hugh Brown married Zillah Baxter (1866) and they had six sons, five living to adulthood. The Brown family increased their land holding until they held a major part of the farmland between Mordialloc Creek to almost the Aspendale Railway Station. The property was a market garden and orchard. Mr Brown took an active interest in the public life of the community, a Justice of the Peace; Councillor of Dandenong Shire for over 30 years, was twice Shire President; and a founding member of the Mordialloc Mechanics Institute. Gertrude Perry was born in California Gully in 1917. Her singing skills were recognized at an early age. She later sang with local choirs and sang on radio. She was involved with the Bendigo Operatic Society for many years. Gertrude began her working life in sales. After studying book keeping she worked at the Bendigo Ordnance Factory during WW2 and then worked for local solicitors and accountants. These photographs of a presentation to a charity organisation were taken in the grounds of Fortuna Villa, Army Survey Regiment in 1984. SPR Tracy (Parker) Ash was the unit’s Miss Golden North section entrant in the Miss Australia Quest. MAJ Bob Roche, RSM Bob Mason and SPR Parker presented a fundraising cheque to the unidentified representative from the Spastic Society. The the newspaper article is from the Bendigo Advertiser. The following wording is taken from the article: ‘Tracy Parker is a sapper in the Army, and a cartographic technician stationed at Fortuna, Bendigo. Originally from Melbourne, Tracy, 23, is the latest entrant in the Miss Golden North segment of the Miss Australia Quest. The highlight of Tracy’s quest will be an open day at Fortuna, once the magnificent home of Bendigo’s Quartz King, George Lansell. This open day at Fortuna, on Sunday, August 26, between 10 am and 4 pm, will give district residents a rare opportunity of inspecting this magnificent building and its gardens. Tracy said there will be handicrafts, rides, competitions and refreshments available at the open day. The main attraction, apart from the building and gardens, would be a hot air balloon. The business of Kitchen and Sons began in 1856 when John Kitchen began to make tallow candles in their backyard in Emerald Hill but had to move two years later due to it being an offensive trade. Bad luck plagued them again after two years when fire destroyed their premises. However after rebuilding , the expanded and moved to Footscray ten years later. Over the next 30years the business expanded further employing upwards of 300 people and became one of the leading manufacturers of soaps, candles and associated products in Australia and New Zealand. They were makers of long standing brands such as Velvet soap and Solvol and by the mid 1920's were employing about 1400 people. It was around this time that they merged with the Lever Co of Sydney and after absorption of other soap companies over the next 40 years , the company became known as Lever & Kitchen in 1962. This box contained gift soaps and probably belongs to the period prior to 1924. Miss C M Trigg of Wangoom was the owner. Book prize awarded to Minnie Monteith for excellence in Violin by Elspeth Carson in 1920. Book donated to the school by Minnie's nephew R H McCarthy of WA in 2013. Minnie went on to achieve Dux of the school during her final year (1921). She also held the role of Head Prefect in 1921. The book prize was provided by Miss Refisch (possibly S Rehfisch who entered the school in 1902.)Minnie was both Dux of the school and Head Prefect in her final year at CPLC.
