Brigitte Muir was born in Belgium in 1958. As a teenager she discovered 'caving' and decided outdoor adventures were more fun than watching television. After immigrating to Australia, Muir settled in the Western Victorian town of Natimuk. From this base she studied art at the University of Ballarat, Horsham Campus. Since 1976, she has climbed and bushwalked all over the world. Brigitte completed the 'Seven Summits' in May 1997 when she became the first woman to scale Mt Everest. She was awarded the Order of Australia in 2000 for her services to mountaineering. She was also awarded the Centenary Medal for mountaineering. Hugh D.T. WIlliamson C.B.E. was born in Ballarat on 04 February 1901 and died on 20 December 1985. "He witnessed first-hand the difficulties of rural life exacerbated by a world war that had stripped whole towns of their young men, and the long, lean years of the Depression were to define the way he lived the rest of his life. Hard work, constancy, eschewing wastage of any kind along with a hunger to seize opportunities wherever they presented themselves were the principles that informed his life and career and which, in time, gave rise to a commitment to others and to organisations and communities in which he saw the same ideals. Hugh attained the rank of Honorary Colonel in the Salvation Army and attained its highest award in 1978 when he was presented with its Distinguished Service Medal. In his time with the Salvation Army, Hugh helped establish the Red Shield Appeal and established scholarships to support senior officers to obtain business management training at the Australian Administrative Staff College in Mt Eliza (operated from a property formerly owned by Sir Reginald Ansett). He began his working life at age 16 at the Ballarat Banking Company. He steadily worked his way up through the ranks of the banking industry to become General Manager of the ANZ Bank from which he retired in 1961. Set of four photographs of Lieutenant John Williams DCM a World War 1 serviceman (refer to item 00150.1 to 00150.4). His enlistment date in the Australian Army was 3/1/1916, and his service number 22228. Williams embarked as a Bombardier with the 23rd Howitzer Brigade, 108th Battery, from Melbourne on the 20/5/1916. As Sergeant, John Williams was recommended for the Distinguished Conduct Medal for conspicuous devotion to duty, particularly as a 'number 1' member of an artillery crew during various battles in France. He was particularly prominent in the battle of Passchendale Ridge during which he refused to be relieved despite being wounded and gassed. John Williams was a Frankston Primary School Headmaster from 1942 to 1949 and lived in Frankston. He died in 1962.

An example of the Liberation Medal, fifth class, issued by the government of Kuwait for service during the Liberation of Kuwait campaign in the Gulf War of 1990 to 1993. This medal was provided to eligible Australian service personnel however is not worn as an official service decoration. This medal is engraved with the following; Hillier D. N. service number 322256. These are made of Bronze with coloured enamel features and have a ribbon with red, white and green vertical stripes. The medal complete with a service ribbon, is in a plastic presentation case which is stored in a protective cardboard sleeve.

Set of three service medals issued to Australian Army serviceman Thomas Patrick Flood, number 3757, Private, 8th Battalion, 1st AIF who served during World War 1. Set consists of the 1914-1915 star, the British War Medal and the Allied Victory Medal, these medals are complete with original ribbons and are unmounted. A small cardboard box addressed to the recipient is enclosed. Presumably this box was originally used to deliver one of the medals by mail.

This set consists of the 1914-1915 star, the British War Medal 1914-1918 and the Victory Medal, all medals are complete with ribbons and have been mounted on a common bar for attachment to the wearer's clothing. Note: these medals are all stamped with the number M2-105682 which is presumed to indicate a second issue set of medals to this serviceman. The medals are actually stamped with the unit being A.S.C.
