Uniform - Badge/s, Public Transport Corporation (PTC), 1990's
Set of four driver / conductor traffic numeral badges or personnel employee numbers and one brass MMTB button. .1 - Badge number, MMTB style, "1453", plated brass to give a gold finish with the numbers fixed to a bar top and bottom and two lugs on the rear to clip into a cap. Made by Stokes and Sons Melbourne - has been stamped onto the rear. .2 - ditto - engraved into a layered plastic backing - black plastic with a white underlay, used by tram crews to indicate their assigned personal employee number. Later MMTB prior to The Met type. See Reg Item 1368 for other examples. .3 - ditto - The Met - Three parts - holder made from gold coloured plastic with a metal Met (the flying one) logo fixed above the holder and fitted with a pin. Consists of: 1 - 2 x Fibreglass sections - one with a pantograph, painted in The Met colours with number 2002 with destination of "Special". Pantograph made from wire. 2 - small articulated section made from fibre glass and black vinyl, painted yellow and green. 3 - two sets of heavy duty electric motor, geared to two sets of four wheel bogies and one unmotorised bogie with a centre pins, washer and split pin that secured the articulated section of the tram. Set of four Black and White photograph of recovery equipment for tramcars. Two prints of each except - .4 .1 - steel beam shown in position in the saloon portion of a tram used to secure a bogie to the body of tram with steel section over transom and showing lifting hooks and securing or lifting bolts. Shown in position where the tramcar body floor was above that of the tramcar transom. .2 - ditto, but on an angle in a wide body tram where the top of the transom matched the top of the floor. The bogies are on an angle. .3 - brackets in position for securing the body spring on the truck fitted to tram 980 to the body of the tram. .4 - brackets shown stored inside the cabin of the tram. Functional object - Sandringham tramway - section staff, 1920s
Item used on the Victorian Railways Sandringham - Black Rock tram line for the short section of the single track of the line between the railway station in Station Street and the depot entrance in Bay Road. Tram drivers were required to carry this to prevent a head-on collision on the single-line section. Image 3 shows the driver placing the item in the "staff box" outside the depot. Based on the attached note "Experimental run number plate used by MMTB 1930/31 to decide if white on black or black on white should be used". Such plates are used by depots to indicate to Inspectors and other staff the allocated run or timetable trip for a particular service. Sign with equal red bands at top and bottom, white band with letters "HAIL CARS HERE" on both sides to indicate to drivers a request stop, that is, the intending passenger had to indicate or hail the oncoming tram for it to stop and allow them to board. Textile - Orchid Tables, Dowel Jones, 2024
The Orchid Tables were on display as part of the Ten Years of Dowel Jones exhibition at the National Wool Museum in 2024. The exhibition label reads: Sitting just outside this exhibition in the National Wool Museum is a 1910 Axminster Jacquard Carpet Loom. This loom was operating at Brintons factory in Geelong from 1960 to 1975, and then at the Melbourne College of Textiles, until it was donated to the museum. In the 1990's the museum commissioned an exclusive pattern called the Manor House Rug. Based on earlier designs from Brintons UK Persian Rug Archive Library, the museum continues to make this rug through the expertise of Loom Technician Michael Farquhar. The Manor House Rug features a central medallion with floral pattern. Working with illustrator Beci Orpin, and referencing Margaret MacDonald & Angair's book 'Orchids of the Anglesea District', we identified regional orchids. By a process of removal and addition, the original floral medallion was replaced with local species as decorative motif. Ten Year of Dowel Jones presents three altered Manor House Rugs, each with different orchids tufted in wool and placed in the centre of each rug. The rugs have been attached by cotton thread to three table frames at different heights to create the Orchid Tables.Three tables consisting of powder coated steel frames, with a woven carpet top. The table tops are made from wool with a jute backing, and feature a red, green, blue, black and cream floral design with an orchid in the centre. Log Splitting Gun
Black powder splitting guns were commonly used to split large logs into more manageable pieces before the advent of excavators and front-end loaders in bush logging operations. A typical splitting gun used in Victorian forests was a piece of high-grade steel about 1-1/2 to 2 inches in diameter and about 16 inches long, and slightly tapered at one end. They had a ¾ inch hole drilled about 9 inches deep into the centre of the shaft with a small pilot hole drilled from the outside to load the fuse. The tube was carefully loaded with an amount of black gunpowder using a funnel and spoon. Experience being the guide on how much powder to use, which depended on log size, species and difficulty of splitting the wood. The hole was stopped with a piece of wadded paper and the gun positioned at the end of a length of the log to be split. The splitting gun was then belted into the log with a large wooden maul or even the back of an axe to a depth of about 3 to 4 inches. There were often markings as a guide. This also had the effect of tamping the black powder inside the gun. Preferably the gun was backed up by another large log to absorb the recoil shock and avoid it flying off in the bush somewhere. I have seen guns where a length of string and coloured flag could be attached to help find them. A length of fuse was then inserted in the small hole and lit. Kaboom !!!! The bridge over Wodonga Creek was opened on Friday 20th October 1922 by the Minister For Public Works Mr Frank. The erection of the bridge was carried out by Mr L Carr, of Brighton. The new concrete bridge was a little more than 500 feet long and consisted of 12 spans. The decking was supported by a number of steel girders, each weighing approximately seven tons. The whole bridge was supported by rows of three cylinders, sunk to a depth of 26ft below the summer water level. Bradford Kendall was established in 1922 by Lesley Bradford and Jim Kendall, investing their winnings on a race horse. They both previously worked at the BHP Steel Works. They gained contracts with the railways and mining industry. During World War II they also manufactured armaments. During the boom of the 1950s they established several foundries in South Australia, Western Australia, Queensland and Victoria. Bradford Kendall Ltd Wodonga foundry was established in 1954. It melted down old railway wheels, rails and redundant machinery to produce a range of low-alloy steel products, especially for earth-moving vehicles, railways, oil rigs and sugar factories. Wodonga was ideally placed as a change point between the different rail gauges of Victoria and New South Wales, close to the Hume Highway and the Snowy Mountain Scheme. The first sod for the site was turned on 2nd June 1954 and the first melt and pour of molten metal at Wodonga took place on 7th July 1954. Bradford Kendall Plant No.5 in Wodonga became one of the most profitable foundries in the Bradford Kendall group. Bill Black became the first plant Manager, a position he held for 30 years. Another long term employee was Pat Gooding who began work at a 15 year old and retired for the position of Bradken foundry Manufacturing Manager 51 years later. In the early 1980s, Australian National Industries Ltd bought Bradford Kendall and other heavy engineering companies. The Wodonga foundry with its (then) 170 or so staff became part of Bradken Consolidated along with nine other foundries in Australia and New Zealand. In 1989, Kerry Packer’s Consolidated Press Holdings Ltd took control of ANI. In January 1999, Smorgon Steel Group acquired ANI, which included the Bradken business. The company changed hands again in 2001 when Smorgon Steel Group sold Bradken to Castle Harlan Australian Mezzanine Partners (CHAMP). In 2016 negotiations began for Bradken to be taken over by Hitachi Construction for A$689 million. In April 2017 Bradken became a wholly owned subsidiary of Hitachi Construction Machinery Co. Welded bronzed steel sculpture painted black ...Inge KING (26 November 1915 – 23 April 2016) Born Berlin, Germany Arrived Australia 1951 Inge King trained as a wood carver and studied at the Berlin Academy (1937-1939), Royal Academy London (1940), and the Glascow School of Art (1941-1943) . She moved to London in 1947 and began carving organic abstract forms in wood and stone. In 1949-50 she went on a study tour to the United States of America where she was inspired to work in metal . Inge King arrived in Australia in 1951 and she completed several large scale public works. Between 1961 and 1975 Inge King lectured at the Institute of Early Childhood Development, Kew. From 1976 to 1987 she lectured in Sculpture at Royal Melbourne Institute of Technology. She was a founding member of the Ceminal Centre Five group, and she actively lobbied architects, governments and State galleries to include modernist sculptures in their plans and displays. In 1991 Inge King joined the first National Trust of Australia (Victoria) Public Art Committee, advising on public art at risk and worthy of Trust classification. The Australian Women's Art Register describes Inge King as having been at the forefront of developing a non figurative vocabulary in Australian Sculpture. Welded bronzed steel sculpture painted black and red. This sculpture by Inge King was purchased in 1967 with funds raised by staff and students of Ballarat Teachers' College, a predecessor institution of Federation University Australia. During this era a collection was made which resulted in an annual purchase or commission of an artwork of note. The Federation University Art Collection features over 1000 works and was listed as a 'Ballarat Treasure' in 2007. Signed 'I.
