This is a small souvenir or promotional book for Herbert Stores in Orbost and Cann River. Lancelot Herbert came to Orbost in 1886, taking up a partnership with local store-owner George Temple. After Mr Temple’s death in 1891, Lancelot took over the store and progressively developed Herberts Snowy River Stores which grew into a department store of several shops along Nicholson St. He also had small shops at Cann River, Noorinbee and Genoa which were run by members of his family, as well as a carrying business and fuel outlets. Lancelot died on 2/6/1911 and his wife Martha [died 1945] are buried in a joint grave in Orbost Cemetery. (info. Noreen and Lindsay Thomson. A foundation day speech in 2002 by Past President, Legatee George Woodward. Instead of looking at the history of Legacy from a timeline perspective he chose to look at old Bulletin articles and comment on aspects of what he read. He mentions they provided a sense of belonging, of fun, sadness, enthusiasm, and activity. It gave him a different view of the founding legatees, other than as ageing old men, they were young men full of energy and enthusiasm. Whittingslowe Engineers Ltd of Adelaide was an Australian manufacturer. A patent for the 'Hot-Glow' water bottles was issued to the company in 1945. An advertisement in 1946 (Morning Bulletin, 19/06) describes the bottles as all metal and advertised their price as 11/6 each.These two hot water bottles are fine and rare examples of products produced by a major Australian engineering and manufacturing company.Two brass cylindrical hot water bottles, manufactured by Whittingslowe. A programme for a Legacy Demonstration at the Olympic Pool Stadium in 1961. Throughout the year Melbourne Legacy provided classes for Junior Legatees such as dancing, gymnastics and eurythmics, the Demonstration was an annual event to showcase their skills. Melbourne Legacy conducted Annual Demonstrations / Parades from 1928 through to 1980s, usually held at Melbourne Town Hall or Olympic Pool Stadium.
