This is a photographic image of the three-masted iron clipper Loch Vennachar created by photographer Fred Kruger of Geelong. Fred Kruger was born in Germany in 1831 and migrated to Victoria before his wife, who arrived in 1863. He began working in photography in the 1850s. He was internationally recognised for his work, which covered a variety of subjects. He settled in Geelong in later years, registering his studio in Skene St, Newtown. He passed away in February 1888. The National Gallery of Victoria now holds much of his work. Loch Vennachar: - Loch Vennachar made many journeys from Britain to Australia and was well-known in Australian ports. On one of its homeward-bound journeys from Australia, the ship sank in the River Thames. Its cargo included 850 tonnes of preserved canned rabbits from Warrnambool's Western Meat Preserving Company. The ship was raised and continued trading for another four years. On 14th June 1905, Loch Vennachar departed Glasgow for Adelaide and Melbourne. The last known sighting of it was on 6th September 1875 when overtaken by the SS Yongala; the captains exchanged the “all well” signals. After that, the ship disappeared with loss of all 27 lives, according to a list that was received by Fremantle through the English mail. The list indicated that there were no passengers on that voyage. Sadly, other Loch Line ships med with similar disasters. The list of lost crew on the Loch Vennachar included Thomas. W. Pearce, apprentice, Southampton. His father was Tom Pearce, one of the two survivors of the Loch Ard, wrecked in 1878. Also, Thomas’ grandfather, James Pearce, was the captain of SS Gothenburg at the time of her wrecking in 1875. Consequently, the wrecking of the Loch Vennachar and the Loc Sloy near the southwest point of Kangaroo Island, a lighthouse was erected, officially opening in June 1907. The northern headland of West Bay was named Vennachar Point in memory of the ship in 1908. The wreck was discovered in 1976 by divers from the Society for Underwater Historical Research, over seventy years after being lost off Kangaroo Island.The Loch Vennachar performed a significant role in Australia’s colonial trade, taking goods between Great Britain and Australia. Ten or more cattle pulling logs to a sawmill (possibly McLaren's sawmill in Belgrave). The land around the track is cleared and it is heavily treed in the background. There is dead timber lying around and the land looks dry. c.1920.

Wringers were used to wring clothes dry after washing. This is a manual one that can be attached to a trough or container that holds the washing. Later on washing machines were made with the wringer already attached and were operated by electricity. Afterwards washing machines spun the clothes dry as part of their cycle.This wringer was used by a resident of the Mount Beauty township during the Kiewa Hydro Electric Scheme in the 1940's and 1950's. White metal machine with 2 adjoining cloth cylinders in the middle. The metal rectangular shape forms a frame around the cylinders which have a metal shield above them and a metal flap below them. At the bottom, on each side is a protruding metal vice enabling the machine to be attached to a container. Elwyn (Jack) LYNN (6 November 1917 – 22 January 1997) Born Canowindra, New South Wales Sydney based artist Elwyn Lynn was a self-taught artist who often used unconventional painting media and expressive surfaces to create abstract work. He trained as a teacher, and was a teacher of English and History in Sydney Secondary schools until 1968. From 1969 to 1983 Elwynn Lynn was Curator of the Power Gallery of Contemporary Art at Sydney University where he built up an international collection, which is now within the Sydney Museum of Contemporary Art. He was an art critic at The Australian for many years, and wrote several books, including one on the artist Sir Sidney Nolan. Elwyn Lynn was awarded Membership of the Order of Australia in 1975. He won the Wynne Prize at the Art Gallery of NSW in 1988, received an Honorary Doctor of Letters from the University of Sydney in 1969, and received the Emeritus Award from the Australia Council in 1994. On the night of August 24, 1941 HMS Kanimbla, with 300 Indian troops on board led a flotilla in a surprise attack on the Iranian port of Bandar Shahpur capturing eight German and Italian merchant vessels all containing valuable cargoes, as well as two Iranian gunboats and a floating dock. Kanimbla went alongside the burning Italian tanker Bronte and fought the fires while engaging a train with her main armament and with her 3-inch guns. She remained in the region until October 11, supervising the port and carrying out salvage work on the captured vessels, including salvage work on the German freighter Hohenfels. After further work in Indian waters during the latter part of October and November, Kanimbla proceeded to Singapore and escorted the first convoy out of that city after the Japanese attack on Malaya. She arrived in Melbourne on Christmas Day. She carried out further convoy work off the Australian coast and in both the Indian and the Pacific Oceans. At the end of the war HMAS Kanimbla was employed in repatriating Australian servicemen from the Pacific Islands and also in returning Dutch dependents to the East Indies (Indonesia). Between October 1946 and June 1948 she sailed between Australia and Japan transporting British Commonwealth Occupation Forces. MS Kanimbla was unique for many reasons, she was the only passenger liner in history to have a fully operational radio broadcasting station built into the ship at the time of construction. In 1908 the listing gives his occupation as a clerk. He was born in 1869 in Richmond, Victoria and died 15 April 1917 in Surrey Hills. Blanche Annie Parsons Cornell (nee Bracher) was born in 1869 in Hokitika, New Zealand; she died on 21 January 1940.
