In 1887, land on the south east corner of Whitehorse Road and Richards Street, Mitcham was purchased and in 1888 a weatherboard church was erected. This early church was used until 1921, when the building was moved to a site in Mitcham Road, just north of Whitehorse Road. The home of Frederick & Julia Lowen was re-located in 1933 to allow Blackburn Road (which then ended in the vicinity of what is now Hawthorn Road) to be extended through to Burwood Road (now Burwood Highway).
