Certificate, Town of Kew, Roll of Honor of the Town of Kew : George Norman Pockett, 1918
George Norman Pockett, who was awarded the certificate was the son of George Pockett , who with his brother designed a number of public parks in Melbourne. George Pockett Snr. was the first curator of the Alexandra Gardens in Kew. (see Comment below)Rolls of Honor were awarded to returned soldiers at the end of the First World War by many towns and cities. This framed certificate awarded to George Norman Pockett by the Town of Kew is one of two held in the Collection. The item is well-provenanced, and through the formal use of emblems and images in the design allows us to make judgements about social and cultural values in the period.Framed Illuminated Certificate: A commemorative certificate documenting the war service of George Norman Pockett of 18 Cobden Street, Kew. George Pockett enrolled at the age of 23 on 5 October 1915, as an engineer in the Australian Army. He embarked on HMAT Wiltshire A18 on 18 November 1915. His rank was that of Warrant Officer Armament Artificer in the 4 FAB [Field Artillery Brigade]. The website of the Australian War Memorial records that he was mentioned in dispatches. The formal certificate records that ‘George Norman Pockett served Australia and the Empire in the Great War and in grateful recognition of his voluntary response to his Country’s Call his name is inscribed on the Roll of Honor of the Town of Kew’. The then Mayor and Town Clerk signed the certificate. [Kew did not become a ‘City’ until 1921]. The certificate highlights emblems and symbols of Australia and Great Britain, and includes the coats of arms of the allies in the war. The certificate is customised with two black and white photographs of Kew: the rotunda in the Alexandra Gardens at left, and boating on the Yarra River at right.George Norman Pockett served Australia and the Empire in the Great War and in grateful recognition of his voluntary response to his Country's Call his name is recorded on the Roll of Honor Town of Kew on behalf of the Mayor, Councillors and Burgesses. 1.8.18. The Kew Historical Society, founded in 1958, is one of the oldest continuing historical societies in the Greater Melbourne region. From its beginnings, the Society has mounted exhibitions and/or displays, in early days in shop windows and in community spaces located in the Kew City Hall (later Kew Library), and since 2010 at the Kew Court House. Exhibitions typically coincided with the annual Kew Community Festival in March, but after 2013 evolved into three new exhibitions yearly at the Kew Court House. Smaller displays continue to be mounted in the Kew Library.A series of born digital photographs of the framed photographs in the exhibition which explored thirteen historic houses in Kew using old and contemporary photographs. The Houses included: Turanville, D'Estaville, Ivy Grange,Tarring, Charleville, Ramornie, Dalsraith, Heald Lawn, and the James Beament House. Decanter Glass, circa mid to late 1900's
This "art deco" style of containers were very popular by the "art and trendy" socialites, be they in the city or in rural towns and properties. This style was very popular in the 1940's to 1950's. The octagonal shape provided the stability of the decanter with its "expensive" contents. Because of its style it blended in well with any lavish meal and socio economic "upper" class environment. It was a part of social atmosphere of elegance and wealth be it in the city or on a rural property. This is very significant to the Kiewa Valley rural "society" environment. At the time of its use the wealth of Australia was "riding on the sheep's back", that is rural income(primary producers), on the whole, was well above that in the cities (industrial). It was in a period where large wealthy property owners could spend lavishly on trendy domestic items. This octagonal glass decanter with its egg shaped stopper is made in an "art deco" style and reflects the 1950's style of bold design. The decanter "stopper" has been cut in a "diamond" cut to reflect the sunlight as does a diamond ring. The stopper is tapered down to permit easy placement and removal. The Stability of the decanter is increased by the broad base and octagonal (8) sides tapering going up the sides.decanter, glass, art deco glass ware, spirits container -

Tool - Hand drill, c1960s
This hand drill was colloquially called an ‘egg beater drill’ due to its method of operation, and was aesthetically similar in appearance to the ‘breast drill’, with the former having a rounded handle instead of a concave bracing surface. Originally designed for drilling into metal, its gears allowed for higher rotation speeds and finer accuracy. This drill was probably manufactured in the 1960s by German company BECON. Distributed in Australia by Beck & Coram, it was widely used and easily accessible.Hand drill with red wheel, dark red paint remnants on handleBECON D129hand drill, hand tools, wood working tools, churchill island -

Badges, Swann & Hudson, Gould League of Bird Lovers, 1950s
This is a badge of the Gould League of Bird Lovers. This organization was formed in 1909 in Victoria and was initially sponsored by the Education Department of Victoria. It was named after the English ornithologist, John Gould and his wife Elizabeth. The initial aim was to encourage school children to protect native birds and their eggs. Today the aim of the group has been widened to include education for environmental sustainability. In 1967 the name was changed to Gould League and in 2006 it became Gould Group Ltd. This badge has no known local provenance but many school children in Warrnambool in the 20th century and even today have belonged to the Gould League of Bird Lovers and the badge is retained as a memento of what was once an important organization for school children in Victoria. This is an irregular-shaped metal badge with the image of a red-capped robin, bronze-coloured tree branch and gold printing on a blue base. The back has a metal clip.Gould League of Bird Lovers Swann & Hudson Frankston gould league of bird lovers, history of warrnambool, john gould, ornithologist -

certificate, Stockland Press Pty Ltd, mid 20th century
Named to honour the work of John and Elizabeth Gould, 'The Gould League of Bird Lovers' was formed in 1909. It was originally set up to prevent bird egg collecting and to educate for the protection of Australian birds. Gould League members were recruited via schools and received membership certificates and badges. Members were encouraged to enter competitions in bird mimicry, write stories and poems and attend 'bird-day concerts'. This certificate belonged to Kevin Legge. The Gould League has made a significant impact on generations of Australians and their environmental attitudes. Being a Gould league member as a child in primary school gave children the opportunity to belong to a group that was learning about and protecting native bushland and its wildlife. Although not operating some Australian states the Gould League still functions in Victoria.A Gould League of Bird Lovers of Victoria membership certificate for Kevin Legge. It has colourful illustrations of native Australian birds on a pale yellow background. The illustrations are by A.T. Mockridge, an early 20th century Melbourne commercial artist and portraitist. In a banner at the top is a photo of John Gould with GOULD LEAGUE of BIRD LOVERS around it. It has a list of patrons, presidents and the Central Council. In the middle there is also the Bird Lover's Pledge signed by Kevin Legge . Ruth Scott, daughter of Herbert Scott and Bertha (nee Coverdale), married David Legge. Patricia Dawn Legge and Kevin David Legge are Ruth and David's children. Kevin was born in 1958.The pledge has been signed by Kevin Legge. -

Functional object - Hand drill mounted on wooden stand, Early to mid 20th Century
This style of geared drill was commonly referred to as an egg-beater drill and was first patented in 1838. During the late 19th century these drills became more common due to the development of mass production. Users also began to mount the drill onto a frame. This allowed greater control over the drill and removed the need to be holding it in both hands. This gave the operater greater control over the item to be drilled. The drill could be easily removed when required. This item is an example of a domestic woodworking tool commonly used before the widespread use of power tools. The construction of the basic wooden frame also demonstrates the ingenuity of early pioneers and tradesmen in adapting tools to suit their own needs.A metal hand drill which has been mounted on to an improvised wooden stand. hand tools, mass production, egg beater drills -
