Programme - Theatre Programme, Grouse in June / by N.C. Hunter, 1958
Arthur Henry Dear was an employee of the City of Kew, acting as Hall Keeper of the Kew Recreation Hall in Wellington Street, and later the new Kew City Hall in Cotham Road. The Arthur Dear Collection contains memorabilia - tickets, programmes, invitations - as well as his identification badge. Items in the collection dates from the 1940s to the 1960s. The Kew Recreation Hall (Wellington Street) and later the Kew City Hall (Cotham Road) were major locations in suburban Melbourne in the postwar period for civic and private events including theatre productions and exhibitions. The Arthur Dear Collection (in conjunction with the scrapbooks compiled by Marion Tilley) provide a comprehensive snapshot of performing arts in Kew during the 1940s, 1950s and 1960s. The collection includes valuable data about performances, performers, directors etc., during this period. Programme for a performance of N.C. Hunter's Grouse in June by The Clarendon Players. The performance in the Kew Recreation Hall was held on 18 December 1958. The programme includes a cast list and a synopsis. The Northern District School of Nursing opened in 1950 to address the issues around nurse recruitment, training and education that had previously been hospital based. The residential school was to provide theoretical and in-house education and practical training over three years. The students would also receive practical hands-on training in the wards of associated hospitals. The Northern District School of Nursing operated from Lister House, Rowan Street, Bendigo. The receipts and expenditure of the EagleHawk RSL Sub Branch cover the years 1960 - 2005. On the final entry a note in red pen dated 28.2.2005 that this was the close of business and the amalgamation of the Eaglehawk RSL Sub Branch with The Bendigo RSL, a final date under is 7.03.2005.Receipt expenditure book, spine and corners are brown leather suede, front & rear face is green buckram, a label on the spine Has "CASH BOOK", ruled lines in blue /red, vertical lines in red. The entries are in blue pen and some minor points in red. On the first page is a typed letter pasted in re a 5 Pound School Scholarship from the Eagle Hawk RSL per year. At the rear is a hand written note with a list of 12 names being the "Foundation Members". Clothing - Formal Silk Brocade Gown, 1953
The donor's aunt, Margaret E. Hollis nee Piesse (18/2/1919-2008) wore this gown to the Coronation of Queen Elizabeth II in 1953. She was one of a total of 8,251 guests who attended the ceremony at Westminster Abbey, London. Margaret Piesse was born in Hobart and grew up in the Piesse family home, 'Merridale', Sackville Street, Kew. She was residing at 4a Little Cloister, Westminster Abbey at the time of the Coronation and was married (on 14/2/1942) to Rev Howard Hollis, a minor Canon at the Abbey and a deputy Priest in – Ordinary to the Queen (1954-1959). Howard chanted the litany and carried the sceptre. Margaret’s daughter-in-law, Sue Hollis, Margaret’s sons, Julian who attended the Coronation with his mother, and Richard, gave the photograph to Felicity Renowden, the donor. Margaret Hollis died in Kew on 16/4/2008.Single piece, formal silk brocade gown worn to the Coronation of Elizabeth II on 2 June 1953. The bodice is informally draped with horizontal folds of fabric above an antebellum waistline below which is a full skirt.
