The other end of the brace would be placed against the user’s abdomen, with one hand holding the brace firmly then the free hand would be used to turn the centre of the brace and drill the hole. This type of drilling method was used prior to the use of the electric drill. This brace appears to have been made by the firm of Alexander Mathieson & Sons from Glasgow, Scotland. Alexander Mathieson & Sons Ltd ('& Sons', after c. 1890), of the Saracen Tool Works, Glasgow, advertised as 'manufacturers of planes, mechanical, engineering and edge-tools'. They received 'prize medals' at the London, Melbourne and Edinburgh International Exhibitions of 1851, 1862, 1880 and 1886, in their 'quest for perfection in tools'. Mathieson's vast output included specialised craft implements for coopers, ship's carpenters, tinsmiths and wheelwrights. The firm originated when master plane-maker John Manners opened premises in Saracen Lane, Glasgow, in 1792. 4 Alexander Mathieson (c. 1797–1852) took over his business in 1821, which he gave as the foundation date of his firm. He was later succeeded by his son, Thomas A. Mathieson (1822–1899), a prominent Glasgow magistrate and preceptor of Hutcheson's Hospital charitable institution. In 1854, Mathiesons moved to East Campbell Street, and had opened branches in Edinburgh, Dundee and Liverpool by 1876. The third generation comprised Thomas O. and James H. Mathieson (born 1867), the latter being a Glasgow bailie (councillor), whose estate totalled an enormous £150,939 in 1926. Dr ​Harry Jenkins owned Churchill Island from 1936-1963. He was first registered as a dentist on 30 March 1904 and practised in North Fitzroy and Ivanhoe. He served as dentist with the AEF and British forces in England and France 1917-1919 and is recorded in the history of the Royal Australian Army Dental Corps. The plaque indicates the location of a prominent practitioner. On his return, ​Jenkins' practice was located at 151 Collins Street from 1919 to 1938, before moving to 33 Collins St in 1939, where he stayed until 1963. A scythe is an agricultural hand tool that cuts grass and is used by making large sweeping motions through the crop. Eventually replaced by horse-drawn or motorised machinery, they are occasionally still used as they are inexpensive and efficient. There are different types of scythes with larger or smaller blades. This particular scythe was manufactured by W.A Tyzack & Co. Ltd. Set up by William Tyzack in the early 1800s in Sheffield, United Kingdom, they grew into a larger manufactory specialising in agricultural tools. Adding the ‘Horseman’ brand to their trademark in 1948, they expanded dramatically and exported throughout the Commonwealth.Donated by Wilfred Dungan on behalf of the Dungan family Collection originally used on the property of the late Dr Rae Dungan in Falls Creek Rd Olinda, purchased in the late 1930s from Olinda pioneers Harry and Minnie Holden. Also on the property of late May Farndon of Farndon’s and Falls Rd Mt Dandenong – aunt of Dr Rae William Dungan and also an early pioneer. Family holidays and weekends involved use of these sorts of farm implements plus working with horses. Post-war, the Olinda hand tools and machinery moved to the Shady Creek, Nilma North area where bush, pasture and cows had replaced the Olinda property. Wilfred well remembers being on one end of the crosscut saws cutting fence posts, logs and timber under “the tireless and vocal instruction” of a red headed local Darnum Rd legend called Harry Collyer. “He drove an old Rugby car and nearly pulled me through the logs with every cut!” Cast steel blade. Made and imported by Swedish company, Husqvarna, this machine was used to mince larger pieces of meat. The grinder was clamped securely to a table, and meat was then fed into the machine through the funnel at the top. The wooden crank handle was turned, moving the spiral grinding mechanism, and pushing the meat through the sieve-like fitting at the end. While hand mincers were ubiquitous in the late nineteenth and early twentieth-century kitchens, and was responsible for reducing food waste and promoting frugal ideals, the Husqvarna brand sold over 12 million worldwide.Hand operated mincing machine, larger than usual, with multi small holed attachment in place. The stem pessary was an object used to rectify uterine displacements - either anteversion or retroversion. The device consisted of a stem which is introduced into the uterus, the stem was then attached to an ovoid flange or ball, on which the cervix uteri then rested. Connected to this flange was an external part or wire frame, which in turn was attached at one extremity to a flat tubular portion, passing into the vagina. This pessary belonged to Dr Olga Bolitho who inherited it from Dame Ella MacKnight. Used by Olga Bolitho once or twice, according to correspondence dated 14/5/00 from Olga Bolitho [held with the donation form] Dame Ella Macknight was an obstetrician and gynaecologist who worked at the Queen Victoria Hospital, Melbourne. She was appointed as a Dame Commander of the Order of the British Empire on 1 January 1969 for services to medicine. She gained her MB BS in 1928 from the University of Melbourne. After qualifying as an obstetrician and gynaecologist, (MD, Melb.1931, DGO Melb 1936), she was associated with the Queen Victoria Hospital from 1935-1977. Her appointments included honorary obstetrician and gynaecologist from 1935-1964; vice-president of the Committee of Management for 1963-1971 and president from 1971-1977. She was president of the Council of the Royal College of Gynaecologists from 1970-1972.After her death in 1996, her family set up a post graduate scholarship in her honour with the Royal College of Gynaecologists & Obstetricians.Clear plastic pessary. This Dunstable Kestrel glider (which originally was finished in silver paint) was built in 1939 by Ric New and members of the Lake Pinjar Soaring Club. It first flew on 26 December 1939 at Lake Pinjar. The first extensive flight was on 7 January 1940 when Ric New managed to stay aloft for 30 minutes and reach a height of 3000 metres. Unfortunately the Kestrel was badly damaged the same day when another club member Jim Brabazon stalled and spun in. The Kestrel was repaired by June 1940 and flown extensively at Lake Pinjar in 1940 and 1941 until Government authorities intervened and ploughed up Lake Pinjar as a wartime measure to prevent it being used as a landing field by the enemy [Allan Ash, Gliding in Australia, pp 92 – 94]. The Lake Pinjar Soaring club was reformed as the Perth Gliding Club after the end of the war and was joined by Ric New with his Kestrel [Allan Ash, Gliding in Australia, p 103]. The glider was held in storage at the Gliding Club of Western Australia prior to transfer to the Australia Gliding Museum. The Deed of Gift indicates that it was formerly owned by Wally Williams, also from Western Australia. The aircraft is in poor condition and has some non-original elements. It is one of three that currently exist. Nevertheless it is considered to be an important exhibit for relating the history of gliding in Western Australia.Aircraft of wood structure skinned with plywood and fabric – off-white colour scheme – crazed flaking paint on fuselage – nose of fuselage has been modified by addition of streamlining – damage includes impact holes to plywood, especially on starboard side – wings have been stripped of fabric covering and some ribs are missing – tailplane and rudder are in reasonable condition although, like wings, have been stripped of fabric. Clothing. Gloves are bound at the wrist, and around a 7 cms long opening on the inside of the wrist. This opening fastens with a white plastic button 1.5 cm in diameter, and a hand-stitched button. Neither button or button hole appears to be original. On the back of the hand are three 7 cm long rows of stitching-appearing to be double rows, but done in one stitching action. Clothing. Fine white linen fabric. A .8 cm 'tuck' edged at top and bottom with a spoke-stitched border, marks the waistline. Below the waistline is a peplum, split at the centre front with 8 cm deep peaks. These peaks are repeated at the centre back. The peplum tapers to 7 cm deep at side seams. The camisole is trimmed at the top edge with a 4 cm deep band of cotton lace. The top edge of the linen fabric has a double row (off set) of cotton embroidered 'spots' 2 mm in diameter, and three rows of drawn thread work - one cm in width, 3.5 cm wide lace form the shoulder straps. The back opening fastens with six tiny 7cm pearl buttons, and hand-stitched button holes. The lower button fastens with a loop at the waistline 1880-90's.
