This book is one of two that were published posthumously after the death of author Sir H Rider Haggard. H. Rider Haggard (1856-1925) was a British author who wrote fiction and non-fiction works and had letters and articles published in newspapers and journals. The book is part of Flagstaff Hill's Pattison Collection. The book was published by the British firm Hutchinson & Co. operated for almost 100 years 1887-1985, before it underwent several mergers.This book is significant for being published after the death of the author Sir H Rider Haggard. The book has additional importance for its connection to the Pattison Collection, which, along with other items at Flagstaff Hill Maritime Village, was originally part of the Warrnambool Mechanics' Institutes’ Collection. The Warrnambool Mechanics’ Institute book collection has historical and social significance for its strong association with the Mechanics Institute movement and its important role in people's intellectual, cultural and social development throughout the latter part of the nineteenth century and the early twentieth century. The collection of books is a rare example of an early lending library and its significance is enhanced by the survival of an original collection of many volumes. Harriet Frances Wicken, 1847_ 1937 was a cookery lecturer and demonstrator in London and published her first book " Kingswood Cookery Book" in 1885. She migrated to Australia in 1886 and gave cookery classes at Warrnambool. Over the ensuing years she worked as a Technical Teacher in Sydney and published a number of books on cookery and domestic economy and housekeeping.The author is one of reknown in her field and spent a period of time in Warrnambool. The contents of the book show methods of cooking and typical fish dishes of the time.Small, hardcover book, cream with regency style pattern printed in grey. Spine bound in watermarked maroon. The title, "Fish Dainties by Mrs H Wicken," is written in dark green with gold capitals. Back cover is same colour but blank of any text. Found in the roof space at Three Springs, Clematis with various bridles, harness, reins and collars. They came from under the original post office at "Holly Tree Inn", Olinda.Ornate Leather Bridle made by J.Kelly, St. Kilda and Melbourne. It has blinkers, snaffle bit and a throat strap. Portrait of Hans and Letitia Hecht with a description of the Trust they founded. Between them is a page outlining the work of the Trust they established. The description reads: "H. & L. Hecht Trust. Thanks for Sharing Our Vision. The Association for the Blind thanks the H. & L. Hecht Trust for their generous support of our Western Metropolitan Regional Low Vision Clinic. The trust was established by the late Hans Hecht, an immigrant from Germany who arrived in Australia in 1900. He married Letitia Robinson in 1911. A successful importer and manufacturer, he set up the H. & L. Hecht Trust to give something back to the community for the help he and his wife had received. Hans Hecht died in Melbourne in 1965, aged 84. Letitia died two years later aged 87. James Henry Steward (1817–1896) were opticians and scientific instrument makers and became established as J.H. Steward in London in 1852. He advertised himself as a “Head Optician” and on the 1st of February, 1913 became incorporated as J.H. Steward Limited. The company produced a large range of items for military use and advertised in their catalogs that they produced instruments for ‘reconnoitering, sketching, night Marching, signaling and gun Laying’. They were well thought of with their work to such a standard that they were made opticians to 'British & Foreign Governments, the National Rifle Associations of England, India, Canada & the Colonies and the National Artillery Association.
