Digital Photograph, Dorothy Wickham, Interior, St Giles Cathedral, Edinburgh, Scotland, 10/2016
St Giles, also known as the High Kirk of Edinburgh is the principal place of worship for the Church of Scotland. It is very interesting for the mason's marks found on its many stone columns inside the church, and for its connections to the graveyard outside. According to wikipedia, "There is record evidence of a church here, very likely on the present site, in the year 854. In 1120 King Alexander I, rebuilt the church in the Norman style. Of this building characteristic features survived until 1798. During the fourteenth century, Edinburgh was captured and plundered by the English under Edward II. and Edward III., and twice St Giles was laid waste. After restoration, the church was more thoroughly ruined at the Burnt Candlemas in 1387, when Richard II. sacked the city. The western part of the fabric was soon in use again ; but the restoration of the choir and transepts, which were much enlarged, lasted on into the sixteenth century. In 1467 the city endowed St Giles as a collegiate church. It now became usual to speak of the nave, where the stonework was ancient, as the Old Kirk, while the eastern part of the building was called the New Kirk. When the movement for reform drew large crowds to St Giles, separate services began to be regularly held in the Old and New Kirks. Soon this was not enough, and the great church was partitioned off into smaller sections. In 1571 St Giles was seized by Kirkcaldie of Grange, and held by him as a stronghold for Queen Mary. This resulted in serious damage to the structure. Two colour photographs of the interior if St Giles Cathedral, Edinburgh, Scotlandst giles cathedral, architecture, mason's marks, stonemasons, church of scotland -

Photograph, Donald McDonald, Yanakie St Kilda, 1872
Built for William Wilmot Couche (1829-1890) probably in 1869. The architect was Lloyd Tayler (1830-1900) and it was designed in the polychromatic Lombardic style that had been introduced to Melbourne by the architect Joseph Reed (1822-1890). Couch was a prominent merchant and businessman. He founded the firm Couch Calder & Co, was director of several insurance companies and a member of the Melbourne Harbour Trust for many years. From about 1900 the house was renamed Wavenhoe. In the 1920s Wavenoe Avenue was constructed through its gardens and most of the land sold off including the blocks at the corner of Hotham Street and Alma Road. The house still stands opposite St Kilda cemetery.black and white photograph copy -

Photograph, The Rose Stereograph Company, St. Katherine's Church, St Helena. Greensborough, c.1936
View of St Katherine's Church from the path inside the Memorial Gate. Also visible several Mediterranean Cypress trees. A prominent gravestone for the Mapleton and Ellis families visible to the far left of the path. This glass plate negative was used to manufacture postcards (1:1 printing) for commercial sale by the Rose Sterograph Company and its subsidiaries. George Rose founded the Rose Stereograph Company in 1880 and was joined by Herbert (Bert) Cutts in the early 20th Century. The pair formed a lifetime working partnership and strong personal friendship. Assisted by George’s two sons, Herbert George and Walter, and later by Neil Cutts, the Rose Stereograph Company continued its operations for more than 140 years. The company was initially built on stereographs, but as cinema took over and stereographs fell out of fashion, the Rose Stereograph Company developed Australia’s first commercially viable photographic postcard business. Specialising in postcards of iconic historical moments and significant landmarks, The Rose Stereograph Company became a staple of the Australian travel industry. This remarkable collection of glass plate negatives, transparencies, and postcards – arguably Australia’s most significant photography collection outside of public hands – has been passed down through the generations, surviving war, relocation, and the harsh Victorian climate. The historic Rose Stereograph collection is the culmination of George Rose’s dream of capturing and preserving precious moments in time and remains the legacy of the Rose and Cutts families. It is with great sadness that the Cutts family says goodbye to a collection that spans five generations and 140 years. The Cutts family understands that for these historically important pieces to rest with one family is to deny others the pleasure of their custodianship.Glass Plate Negative Size: 9.2 x 14 cmSt. Catherine's Church, St Helena, Greensborough, Published by W. St George's Health Service was established in 1912 by an order of Church of England nuns, the Sisters of the Holy Name. In 1949, the Hospital was sold to the Victorian government. For many years, St George's Health Service was known for expertise in maternity, acute medical and surgical services. From 1991, St George's Health Service began developing aged care services. From 1996 to 1998 the acute medical, surgical and maternity services were transferred to other facilities. From early 1999, St George's Health Service provided solely specialised aged care services. St George's Health Service became part of St Vincent's in March 2001, under an auspice arrangement with the Victorian government. Drawing - Property Illustration, Margaret Picken, 3/2 St Johns Parade, Kew, 1991
After training as a Cartographic Draftsman within the mining industry, I worked as a property illustrator for real estate firms in the eastern suburbs of Melbourne for 22 years from 1983. I initially photographed houses with a Polaroid camera and made a 'thumbnail' sketch while there. The photos were used to scale off a sketch in pencil and then that sketch was overlaid with drafting film and the 'pen and ink' completed. The pens I used were the Rotring ‘Rapidigraph’ drafting pens. The ink was also made by Rotring (German). The film was ‘Rapidraw’, polyester drafting film, double matte. It takes a very fine line and doesn’t bleed. As well as house sketches, there were often floor plans and site plans ordered. Aerial sketches were ordered when the property needed an overall view. (Margaret Picken, 2020)This drawing is one of a series created by Margaret Picken for a number of real estate agents in Melbourne between 1983 and 2005. "ST. PETER'S CHURCH, DAYLESFORD Last Sunday his Grace the Archbishop confirmed a large number of children at St. Peter's Church, Daylesford. His Grace was assisted by Rev. J. J. Malone, P.P. The congregation included a large number of worshipers from outside districts. A short address delivered by the Archbishop was attentively listened to, and many were the expressions of congratulation extended to his Grace upon his recovery from the indisposition which had incapacitated him from active work recently. At the conclusion of Confirmation the children were treated to refreshments on the lawn in front of the presbytery A large number of parishioners dined with Fr. Malone, and the Archbishop renewed former acquaintanceships. In the evening a mission was opened by the Rev. J. O'Brien and Rev. J. Brown, of the Redemptorist Order. The mission will be concluded on Sunday next. The exercises have been well attended. The interior of this beautiful Gothic church has recently undergone complete decoration, and one of the features that have, received special attention is the stained-glass. The windows consist of eight- two-light with trefoil piece of tracery, and in each is designed one of the following figures:—St, Francis of Assisi, St. Francis Xavier, St. Augustine, St. Monica, St. Stanislaus, St. Aloysius, Our Lady, St. Joseph, St. Patrick, St. Bridget, St. Agnes, 'St. Rose of Lima, St. Ignatius, St. Vincent de Paul, St. Alplionsus Liguori, St. Thomas Aquinas. The figures are set, in medallions formed with richly designed Gothic ornament in the form of crockets surmounted by a cross and crown, while in the tracery immediately above the windows is a monogram of the names of the saints. The figures are richly coloured in glorious antique glass, with the ornamental detail in lovely mellow tones of old gold and pale yellow stains. The whole effect is rich and at the same time restrained in colour. At the base of each window is written the name of the donor. The whole of the work was designed and executed by Messrs. Brooks, Robinson and Co. limited, at their stained-glass studios, Elizabeth-street, Melbourne. The scheme is an original treatment, but at the same time strictly orthodox and Gothic in style. One feature of the work which must be apparent to those who are interested in stained-glass decoration is the maximum effect obtained with a minimum of expenditure." (Melbourne Advocate, 4 December 1909) A number of coloured photographs of the stained glass windows from the interior of St Peter's Catholic Church, Daylesford.
