A photo of 6 boys with a trolley of suitcases at Spencer Street Railway Station, Melbourne (since renamed Southern Cross Station). They have arrived from country towns to attend Legacy Somers Camp in January 1973. It came from an envelope with other camp photos. The Legacy envelope was marked "P6 Junior Legatee Camps and Hols" in red pen, and dated Jan 1977 in pencil. The envelope contents are items 00418 to 00425. Melbourne Legacy provided camps for junior legatees - the children of deceased servicemen. It started with outings to the property of Legacy founder, Legatee Stan Savige, who had a place in Balnarring. Permanent camp buildings were built and with an association with Lord Somers (Governor of Victoria) it was called Somers Camp. The photograph shows Geelong No. 2, built by Duncan and Fraser of Adelaide in 1911 in its as-built configuration, c1920 at the Wharf terminus, known as the Moorabool Street Pier. The tram line was opened in 1912 and closed in 1940 when the track in Corio St was extended to the Beach terminus. There are a number of horse-drawn vehicles in the view with goods being loaded or unloaded on the ship moored on the right. The tramway was operated by the Melbourne Electric Supply Co. (MESCo). The photograph from the collection of Ken Magor was published in the Sydney Tramway Museum's magazine Trolley Wire in April 1981. The photo caption advises - "The steamship to the right is the Edina, a veteran Port Phillip steamer which was launched in 1854 and was not broken up until 1957." Percy Markham Ireland (1893-1976), a tramway rolling stock engineer with the MMTB and a Military engineer applied in 1920 for a patent for a "Trolley Pole safety appliance for electric trams and the like". He was successful in gaining a patent in a number of countries including the UK, France, Germany, Canada, the USA, and New Zealand. The associated documents show the differences in making patent applications in various countries. From research undertaken by the Museum it appears that while his patent applications were successful, his invention was never actually implemented on tramcars in Melbourne". Collected by Noelle Jones as research for an article in the March 2023 issue of the Museum's magazine Bellcord, giving details of Mr Ireland's tramway and military career.
