Albert Jacka No 465 enlisted in D Coy 14th batt AIF on 18.9.14. Embarked for Eygpt 22.12.14. He rose through the ranks from Pte to Captain by 15.3.17. He was WIA 3 times and hospitalised twice with illness. Awarded the Victoria Cross at Courtney's Post 19/20th May 1915. The Military Cross at Pozieres on 7.8.16 and a Bar to the Military Cross on 10.4.17 near Queant. He was discharged from the AIF on 10.1.20. This is a very brief history of "Jacka". Things much the same as usual here. We are both well. I had a letter from Tom last week. We were inspected by the General after Church Parade this morning. Glad uncles crop turned out so well. I suppose Lot has gone to town by this. I wrote to her and sent her some things. You ought to have them by now. Roy has has had no letters from home for a long time. Don’t address them to Hospital. This bell was apparently salvaged from a Freighter by Syd Storrie a Merchany Navy Sailor. The Freighter had been torpedoed by a German Submarine in WW1.Ship's bell, rough cast bronze? Embarked for England 27.7.1916, transfer to 37th Battalion 23.9.1916, hospitalised 9.10.1916 with Scabies. Rejoined unit 6.1.1917, allowed Regt No 5977A, embarked for France 25.2.1917. Hospitalised 16.3.1917 with Enteritis, rejoined unit 25.3.1917. Hospitalised 21.5.1917 with Debility, rejoined unit 1.6.1917. Hospitalised 14.6. 1917 with Exhaustion later as growth in groin. From here he gets himself into trouble.
