Colour photo of a group of Legacy widows in Beijing China. Melbourne Legacy would help arrange tours and day trips for the Widows clubs. This was a tour in 1993 that went to China. There appears to be about 50 ladies in the photo with a two tour guides. From the sign it appears it was taken on 23 June 1993. The tour was run by Interasia Tours and advertised in The Answer. It was an 8 day tour to Beijing and covered places such as Temple of Heaven, Tiananmin Square, Forbidden City, Summer Palace, Ming Tombs and the Great Wall of China. An unstrung, DWG & Co. flat-top tennis racquet, presented as a trophy, with ribbon collar, leather crown protector, and unique wood mosaic inlay along length of shaft and handle. Manufacturer's details impressed across throat on reverse. Silver plaque nailed to throat on obverse, featuring the engraved inscription: TOURNAMENT/SHARON SPRINGS/JULY 15TH 1885/SINGLES/WON BY/VALENTINE/G. HALL. This article look at the Temperance Hall which was built in 1860 for the Bendigo Total Abstinence Society and its neighbour extending up the hill. Temperance Hall was designed by Vahland and Getzschmann. The building next was also built by Vahland and Getzschmann as a residence for Robert Strickland, later it was acquired by Dr. Oliver Penfold who extended the building and set up his medical practice . Mrs Constance Clucas, a talented musician in the Holy Trinity choir, started 'The Surrey Hills Operatic Society' in 1931. She trained members of the Society to concert standard. Mrs Clucas produced operettas for some ten years. Titles included 'The Arcadian', 'Princess Ju Ju', 'The Quaker Girl', and 'Miss Hook of Holland'. Local musicians formed the orchestra which was extended for the concert presentation by a few guest artists among whom were locals Marion de Saxe, a flautist, and Fred McBeath. Rehearsals were held in the Surrey Hall and a small Canterbury Road Lodge Hall with final staging in the Surrey Hall and Camberwell Town Hall. Scores and costumes were hired from J. C. Williamson.The photo is reflective of the cultural life of Surrey Hills in the 1930s.A sepia coloured photograph of a lady standing in a garden dressed in a peasant looking outfit and holding a (?) feather duster. Badge, Cap badge
The badge was worn by John Hall in 1909 when he was 12 years of age. A silver-coloured metal Ballarat College badge worn on school cap featuring the school motto 'E studiis Claritudo Venit' and a belt with buckle design embossed around its outer edge. Inside the outer edge the badge is voided around the Minerva head and embossed 'Ballarat College'. The badge is sewn to a fragment of Garbutt House ribbon.
