Waterway junctions had a particular attraction as tribal meeting places and the junction of the Diamond Creek with the Yarra River (Birr-arung to the Wurundjeri) was one such important location in terms of aboriginal culture. The sculpture “Not Just a Pretty Place” by Aleks Danko, located near the junction of these two watercourses pays tribute to this important cultural location. The first European settlers were squatters or leaseholders and itinerants such as timber workers. Records of their early occupation are sketchy but the Eltham Lower Park area was probably included within the pastoral run established in 1841 by Henry Foley. He sold his leasehold in 1845 to Joseph Wilson who in turn sold it to Frederick Faulkner soon after. From this early history the Eltham Lower Park area has undergone many changes and has been developed to provide residents and visitors with a range of passive and active public open space, including even being used for various horse racing events. At our next meeting, Jim Connor will explore the history of Eltham Lower Park and touch on various individuals and groups involved along the way.1:05:19 duration Digital MP3 file; 22.4MBaudio recording, eltham district historical society, meeting, society meeting, jim connor, eltham, eltham lower park -

In those days Eltham Park consisted of a single oval with a cricket pitch running north south in much the same position as today’s oval closest to Main Road. An unsealed track ran around the perimeter of park, essentially bisecting today’ rear oval and horse paddock. Picnickers have pulled up in their cars and are enjoying a game of cricket being played on the oval. This glass plate negative was used to manufacture postcards (1:1 printing) for commercial sale by the Rose Stereograph Company and its subsidiaries. George Rose founded the Rose Stereograph Company in 1880 and was joined by Herbert (Bert) Cutts in the early 20th Century. The pair formed a lifetime working partnership and strong personal friendship. Assisted by George’s two sons, Herbert George and Walter, and later by Neil Cutts, the Rose Stereograph Company continued its operations for more than 140 years. The company was initially built on stereographs, but as cinema took over and stereographs fell out of fashion, the Rose Stereograph Company developed Australia’s first commercially viable photographic postcard business. Specialising in postcards of iconic historical moments and significant landmarks, The Rose Stereograph Company became a staple of the Australian travel industry. This remarkable collection of glass plate negatives, transparencies, and postcards – arguably Australia’s most significant photography collection outside of public hands – has been passed down through the generations, surviving war, relocation, and the harsh Victorian climate. The historic Rose Stereograph collection is the culmination of George Rose’s dream of capturing and preserving precious moments in time and remains the legacy of the Rose and Cutts families. It is with great sadness that the Cutts family says goodbye to a collection that spans five generations and 140 years. The Cutts family understands that for these historically important pieces to rest with one family is to deny others the pleasure of their custodianship.Glass Plate Negative Size: 9.2 x 13.9 cmPicnic Grounds, Eltham, Valentine Series No. 3195, Copyrighteltham lower park, cricket, cars, buildings, electricity lines, lower plenty, eltham, postcard, travel, picnic ground, rose stereograph company, valentine series postcard, glass plate negative, peter and elizabeth pidgeon collection -

... Stan Baulch named this Dunmore section, Rose Park, a property to the west of his father’s original Rose Park property. ...Stan Baulch named this Dunmore section, Rose Park, a property to the west of his father’s original Rose Park property. ...This card has a sketch map showing the properties surrounding Dunmore on one side and a detailed sketch plan of Dunmore homestead in the early 1970s on the other side. The plan of Dunmore homestead shows interesting features such as the brick oven for bread making, the croquet lawn, the site of the aboriginal mia mias, the Turkish baths and the fowl house used later as a poison house. Francis and Ann Baulch were pioneer settlers in the Kirkstall area and their son Samuel worked at Dunmore in the Macarthur area before purchasing in the early 1870s the property he named Rose Park. In the 1890s he acquired property in the Dunmore estate and his son Stan Baulch gained a section of the Dunmore property after his father’s death. Stan Baulch named this Dunmore section, Rose Park, a property to the west of his father’s original Rose Park property. Stan Baulch was a long time member of the Warrnambool & District Historical Society and he contributed many local history articles and donated many local artefacts to the Society. This sketch plan is of interest as it tells us what the historic homestead of Dunmore in Western Victoria was like in the early 1970s. It will be useful for research. This is a sheet of white lightweight cardboard with a pencilled sketch on one side and a blue ink sketch plan of a house on the other side. The edges of the card have some torn sections. The card is enclosed in an oval cardboard cylinder (recycled and torn at the ends). Both the card and the cover have handwritten titles in ink. ... In 1888, in the section of Park Hill Road between Belmont Avenue and Normanby Road there was only one street running between Park Hill Road and Cotham Road. ...This was Park Road, later to be named Adeney Avenue. ...In 1888, in the section of Park Hill Road between Belmont Avenue and Normanby Road there was only one street running between Park Hill Road and Cotham Road. This was Park Road, later to be named Adeney Avenue. Subsequent 20th century subdivisions created the ‘through roads’ of Cecil Street, Wimba Avenue, Florence Avenue, Marshall Avenue, Uvadale Road, and Barrington Avenue. This subdivision represents an attempt by auctioneers, rather than town planners to create an urban environment from larger residential allotments or in many cases farmland. Existing streets such as Parkhill and Normanby Roads provided a convenient starting point for the surveyors, but the Road named ‘Street Street’ indicates the role of the private surveyor in creating streets. Given that a number of allotments are listed as sold on the plan, the street is presumably Cecil Street. Even those lots that had been sold do not quite match the dimensions of the blocks in this parcel of land today, indicating that either further subdivisions or boundary alterations occurred.Subdivision plans are historically important documents used as evidence for the growth of suburbs in Australia. They frequently provide information about when the land was sold as well as evidence relating to surveyors and real estate and financial agents. The numerous subdivision plans in the Kew Historical Society's collection represent working documents, ranging from the initial sketches made in planning a subdivision to printed plans on which auctioneers or agents listed the prices for which individual lots were sold. In a number of cases, the reverse of a subdivision plan in the collection includes a photograph of a house that was also for sale by the agent. These photographs provide significant heritage information relating house design and decoration, fencing and household gardens. The photograph may also be aesthetically significant depending on the importance of the photographic atelier.Hand-drawn subdivision plan of 19 lots facing Parkhill Road, Normanby Road, and an unnamed street [now Cecil Street] in Kew.Estate Agent notes in ink indicate those lots which had sold.subdivision plans - kew, parkhill road - kew, cecil street - kew, normanby road - kew, cecil street -kew, parkhill road - kew, normanby road - kew, crown portion 83 - kew -

... The majority of the area burnt in Victoria was public land, 1.19 million hectares of parks and forests, including 60 per cent of the Alpine National Park and 81 per cent of the Mt Buffalo National Park. ...The majority of the area burnt in Victoria was public land, 1.19 million hectares of parks and forests, including 60 per cent of the Alpine National Park and 81 per cent of the Mt Buffalo National Park. ...A description of efforts to fight the bushfires in Gippsland in 2003, including maps and illustrations. This volume was published as a tribute to the work of staff and volunteers who put themselves at risk to protect local communities. It shows the impact on those communities in Victoria and the support they gave to those involved in fighting largest bushfires in Victoria for 60 years. The Alpine bushfires started on 8th January 2003, a day of Total Fire Ban. Lightning ignited 87 fires in the North-East and East Gippsland regions. Eight of these fires were unable to be contained; they joined together to form the largest fire in Victoria since the Black Friday fires in 1939. The majority of the area burnt in Victoria was public land, 1.19 million hectares of parks and forests, including 60 per cent of the Alpine National Park and 81 per cent of the Mt Buffalo National Park. Firefighting efforts were made difficult in hard-to-access, remote forest terrain. Approximately 90,000 hectares of private land was burnt. This book is significant because it documents the 2003 Victorian Bushfires and serves as a tribute to the CFA staff and volunteers who fought them. This publication of 119 pages features text, colour images, maps and detailed information related to the 2003 bushfires in Victoria. At bottom of front cover:- CFA Victoria Logo Victorian Government Logovictorian fires 2003, cfa (vic) -

The newly appointed secretary of the newly formed Cheltenham Rifle Club, Mr E.C. Rippon, enrolled 55 new members on the day, and the club resolved to consult with the Defence Department regarding the suitability of Cheltenham Park for that purpose, and Moorabbin Council to grant the use of the park. By 1912 the club was already on the verge of disintegrating. The Cheltenham Park range had been disbanded two years earlier. A new, shorter range and club rooms were completed in October 1912. The club continued to have difficulties over location and funds, despite being granted an exemption from paying rates for the duration of the First World War. In 1919, a proposal to disband was put forward at a club meeting. Members rejected the proposal deciding instead to wait on the rumoured reopening of the Langwarrin range. By 1921 it became evident the Langwarrin range would not reopen. A resolution to wind up the organisation was put to the meeting and accepted.Green, cloth bound book with red leather spine. A white label is adhered to the front of the book with MINUTE BOOK printed in black text. The book is hardcovered and, inside, are approximately 186 pages which have been filled with handwritten text as meeting minutes and lists, including a list of commitee officers. The inside fly pages are decorated with blue and red marbling.Handwritten text on the white paper adhered to the front of the book is no longer legible.cheltenham, sport, club, rifles -
