The Open Air School in Laurel Grove Blackburn was established by the Education Department in 1915 to give poor children from inner-city areas who were of 'delicate' health a chance to take advantage of the healthy bush environment of the Blackburn area. This image was one of a series taken by Harold Millane in the late 1940's. They were printed onto post cards. Mary Millane, Harold's wife, printed captions on each negative with Indian ink. The series includes a variety of views of Mitcham, Vermont, Nunawading, Park Orchards and Doncaster East. The Nunawading Ladies Benevolent Society became the Whitehorse Emergency Relief Network in 1999 when a number of community organizations were encouraged to form a network by Betty and Keith Rooney.
