Functional object - Ship's Wheel, 1871 or earlier
The ship building company E. & A. Sewall, from Bath, Maine, USA, built many ships that had wheels with the same decorative, starburst pattern on them as this particular wheel segment, including the Eric the Red. The wheel was manufactured by their local Bath foundry, Geo. Moulton & Co. and sold to the Sewall yard for $100, according to the construction accounts of the vessel. Eric the Red was a wooden, three masted clipper ship. She had 1,580 tons register and was the largest full-rigged ship built at Bath, Maine, USA in 1871. She was built and registered by Arthur Sewall, later to become the partnership E. & A. Sewall, and was the 51st ship built by this company. The annually-published List of Merchant Vessels of the U.S. shows that Bath was still the home port of Eric the Red in 1880. The vessel was named after the Viking discoverer, Eric the Red, who was the first European to reach the shores of North America (in 980AD). The ship Eric the Red at first traded in coal between America and Britain, and later traded in guano nitrates from South America. In 1879 she was re-metalled and was in first class condition. On 10th June 1880 (some records say 12th June) Eric the Red departed New York for Melbourne and then Sydney. She had been commissioned by American trade representatives to carry a special cargo of 500 exhibits (1400 tons) - about a quarter to a third of America’s total exhibits - from America for the U.S.A. pavilion at Melbourne’s first International Exhibition. The exhibits included furniture, ironmongery, wines, chemicals, dental and surgical instruments, paper, cages, bronze lamp trimmings, axles, stamped ware, astronomical and time globes, samples of corn and the choicest of leaf tobacco. Other general cargo included merchandise such as cases of kerosene and turpentine, brooms, Bristol's Sarsaparilla, Wheeler and Wilson sewing machines, Wheeler’s thresher machine, axe handles and tools, cases of silver plate, toys, pianos and organs, carriages and Yankee notions. The Eric the Red left New York under the command of Captain Z. Allen (or some records say Captain Jacques Allen) and 24 other crew including the owner’s son third mate Ned Sewall. There were 2 saloon passengers also. On 4th September 1880 the ship had been sailing for an uneventful 85 days and the voyage was almost at its end. Eric the Red approached Cape Otway in a moderate north-west wind and hazy and overcast atmosphere. Around 1:30am Captain Allen sighted the Cape Otway light and was keeping the ship 5-6 miles offshore to stay clear of the hazardous Otway Reef. However he had badly misjudged his position. The ship hit the Otway Reef about 2 miles out to sea, south west of the Cape Otway light station. Captain Allen ordered the wheel to be put ‘hard up’ thinking that she might float off the reef. A heavy sea knocked the man away from the wheel, broke the wheel ropes and carried away the rudder. The sea swamped the lifeboats, the mizzenmast fell, with all of its rigging, then the mainmast fell and the ship broke in two. Some said that the passenger Vaughan, who was travelling for his health and not very strong, was washed overboard and never seen again. The ship started breaking up. The forward house came adrift with three of the crew on it as well as a longboat, which the men succeeded in launching and keeping afloat by continually bailing with their sea boots. The captain, the third mate (the owner’s son) and others clung to the mizzenmast in the sea. Then the owner’s son was washed away off the mast. Within 10 minutes the rest of the ship was in pieces, completely wrecked, with cargo and wreckage floating in the sea. The captain encouraged the second mate to swim with him to the deckhouse where there were other crew but the second mate wouldn’t go with him. Eventually the Captain made it to the deckhouse and the men pulled him up. At about 4:30am the group of men on the deckhouse saw the lights of a steamer and called for help. At the same time they noticed the second mate and the other man had drifted nearby, still on the spur, and pulled them both onto the wreck. The coastal steamer Dawn was returning to Warrnambool from Melbourne, its sailing time different to its usual schedule. Cries were heard coming from out of the darkness. Captain Jones sent out two life boats, and fired off rockets and blue lights to illuminate the area. They picked up the three survivors who were in the long boat from Eric the Red. Two men were picked up out of the water, one being the owner’s son who was clinging to floating kerosene boxes. At daylight the Dawn then rescued the 18 men from the floating portion of the deckhouse, which had drifted about 4 miles from where they’d struck the reef. Shortly after the rescue the deckhouse drifted onto breakers and was thrown onto rocks at Point Franklin, about 2 miles east of Cape Otway. Captain Jones had signalled to Cape Otway lighthouse the number of the Eric the Red and later signalled that there was a wreck at Otway Reef but there was no response from the lighthouse. The captain and crew of the Dawn spent several more hours searching unsuccessfully for more survivors, even going back as far as Apollo Bay. On board the Dawn the exhausted men received care and attention to their needs and wants, including much needed clothing. Captain Allen was amongst the 23 battered and injured men who were rescued and later taken to Warrnambool for care. Warrnambool’s mayor and town clerk offered them all hospitality, the three badly injured men going to the hospital and others to the Olive Branch Hotel, then on to Melbourne. Captain Allen’s leg injury prevented him from going ashore so he and three other men travelled on the Dawn to Portland. They were met by the mayor who also treated them all with great kindness. Captain Allen took the train back to Melbourne then returned to America. Those saved were Captain Z. Allen (or Jacques Allen), J. Darcy chief mate, James F. Lawrence second mate, Ned Sewall third mate and owner’s son, John French the cook, C. Nelson sail maker, Clarence W. New passenger, and the able seamen Dickenson, J. Black, Denis White, C. Herbert, C. Thompson, A. Brooks, D. Wilson, J. Ellis, Q. Thompson, C. Newman, W. Paul, J. Davis, M. Horenleng, J. Ogduff, T. W. Drew, R. Richardson. Four men had lost their lives; three of them were crew (Gus Dahlgreen ship’s carpenter, H. Ackman steward, who drowned in his cabin, and George Silver seaman) and one a passenger (J. B. Vaughan). The body of one of them had been found washed up at Cape Otway and was later buried in the lighthouse cemetery; another body was seen on an inaccessible ledge. Twelve months later the second mate James F. Lawrence, from Nova Scotia, passed away in the Warrnambool district; an obituary was displayed in the local paper. The captain and crew of the Dawn were recognised by the United States Government in July 1881 for their humane efforts and bravery, being thanked and presented with substantial monetary rewards, medals and gifts. Neither the ship, nor its cargo, was insured. The ship was worth about £15,000 and the cargo was reportedly worth £40,000; only about £2,000 worth had been recovered. Cargo and wreckage washed up at Apollo Bay, Peterborough, Port Campbell, Western Port and according to some reports, even as far away as the beaches of New Zealand. The day after the wreck the government steam ship Pharos was sent from Queenscliff to clear the shipping lanes of debris that could be a danger to ships. The large midship deckhouse of the ship was found floating in a calm sea near Henty Reef. Items such as an American chair, a ladder and a nest of boxes were all on top of the deckhouse. As it was so large and could cause danger to passing ships, Captain Payne had the deckhouse towed towards the shore just beyond Apollo Bay. Between Apollo Bay and Blanket Bay the captain and crew of Pharos collected Wheeler and Wilson sewing machines, nests of boxes, bottles of Bristol’s sarsaparilla, pieces of common American chairs, axe handles, a Wheelers’ Patent thresher and a sailor’s trunk with the words “A. James” on the front. A ship’s flag-board bearing the words “Eric the Red” was found on the deckhouse; finally those on board the Pharos had the name of the wrecked vessel. During this operation Pharos came across the government steamer Victoria and also a steamer S.S. Otway, both of which were picking up flotsam and wreckage. A whole side of the hull and three large pieces of the other side of the hull, with some of the copper sheathing stripped off, had floated on to Point Franklin. Some of the vessels yards and portions of her masts were on shore. The pieces of canvas attached to the yards and masts confirmed that the vessel had been under sail. The beach there was piled with debris several feet high. There were many cases of Diamond Oil kerosene, labelled R. W. Cameron and Company, New York. There were also many large planks of red pine, portions of a small white boat and a large, well-used oar. Other items found ashore included sewing machines (some consigned to ‘Long and Co.”) and notions, axe and scythe handles, hay forks, wooden pegs, rolls of wire (some branded “T.S” and Co, Melbourne”), kegs of nails branded “A.T. and Co.” from the factory of A. Field and Son, Taunton, Massachusetts, croquet balls and mallets, buggy fittings, rat traps, perfumery, cutlery and Douay Bibles, clocks, bicycles, chairs, a fly wheel, a cooking stove, timber, boxes, pianos, organs and a ladder. (Wooden clothes pegs drifted in for many years). There seemed to be no personal luggage or clothing. The Pharos encountered a long line, about one and a half miles, of floating wreckage about 10 miles off land, south east of Cape Otway, and in some places about 40 feet wide. It seemed that more than half of it was from Eric the Red. The ship’s crew rescued 3 cases that were for the Melbourne Exhibition and other items from amongst the debris. There were also chairs, doors, musical instruments, washing boards, nests of trunks and fly catchers floating in the sea. Most of the goods were saturated and smelt of kerosene. A section of the hull lies buried in the sand at Parker River Beach. An anchor with chain is embedded in the rocks east of Point Franklin and a second anchor, thought to be from Eric the Red, is on display at the Cape Otway light station. (There is a photograph of a life belt on the verandah of Rivernook Guest House in Princetown with the words “ERIC THE RED / BOSTON”. This is rather a mystery as the ship was registered in Bath, Maine, USA.) Parts of the ship are on display at Bimbi Park Caravan Park and at Apollo Bay Museum. Flagstaff Hill Maritime Village also has part of the helm (steering wheel), a carved wooden sword (said to be the only remaining portion of the ship’s figurehead; further research is currently being carried out), a door, a metal rod, samples of wood and a medal for bravery. Much of the wreckage was recovered by the local residents before police and other authorities arrived at the scene. Looters went to great effort to salvage goods, being lowered down the high cliff faces to areas with little or no beach to collect items from the wreckage, their mates above watching out for dangerous waves. A Tasmanian newspaper reports on a court case in Stawell, Victoria, noting a man who was caught 2 months later selling tobacco from the wreckage of Eric the Red. Some of the silverware is still treasured by descendants of Mr Mackenzie who was given these items by officials for his help in securing the cargo. The gifts included silver coffee and tea pots, half a dozen silver serviette rings and two sewing machines. The wreck and cargo were sold to a Melbourne man who salvaged a quantity of high quality tobacco and dental and surgical instruments. Timbers from the ship were salvaged and used in the construction of houses and sheds around Apollo Bay, including a guest house, Milford House (since burnt down in bushfires), which had furniture, fittings and timber on the dining room floor from the ship. A 39.7 foot long trading ketch, the Apollo, was also built from its timbers by Mr Burgess in 1883 and subsequently used in Tasmanian waters. It was the first attempt at ship building in Apollo bay. In 1881 a red light was installed about 300 feet above sea level at the base of the Cape Otway lighthouse to warn ships when they were too close to shore; It would not be visible unless a ship came within 3 miles from it. This has proved to be an effective warning. The State Library of Victoria has a lithograph in its collection depicting the steamer Dawn and the shipwrecked men, titled. "Wreck of the ship Eric the Red, Cape Otway: rescue of the crew by the Dawn". “The Eric the Red is historically significant as one of Victoria's major 19th century shipwrecks. (Heritage Victoria Eric the Red; HV ID 239) The wreck led to the provision of an additional warning light placed below the Cape Otway lighthouse to alert mariners to the location of Otway Reef. The site is archaeologically significant for its remains of a large and varied cargo and ship's fittings being scattered over a wide area. The site is recreationally and aesthetically significant as it is one of the few sites along this coast where tourists can visit identifiable remains of a large wooden shipwreck, and for its location set against the background of Cape Otway, Bass Strait, and the Cape Otway lighthouse.“ (Victorian Heritage Database Registration Number S239, Official Number 8745 USA) Segment of a ship's wheel, or helm, from the wreck of the sailing ship Eric the Red. The wheel part is an arc shape from the outer rim of the wheel and is made up of three layers of timber. The centre layer is a dark, dense timber and is wider than the two outer layers, which are less dense and lighter in colour. The wheel segment has a vertically symmetrical, decorative copper plate inlaid on the front. The plate has a starburst pattern; six stars decorate it, each at a point where there is a metal fitting going through the three layers of timber to the rear side of the wheel. On the rear each of the six fittings has an individual copper star around it. The edges of the helm are rounded and bevelled, polished to a shine in a dark stain. Around each of the stars, front and back, the wood is a lighter colour, as though the metal in that area being polished frequently. The length of the segment suggests that it has probably come from a wheel or helm that had ten spokes. (Ref: F.H.M.M. 16th March 1994, 239.6.610.3.7. This wooden sword is said to “possibly be the only remaining part of the figurehead from the sailing ship Eric the Red.” It was previously part of the collection of the old Warrnambool Museum and the entry in its inventory says “Wooden sword, portion of the figurehead, held by “Eric the Red” at the bow.” A large part of the ship’s hull was found on the rocks and a figurehead may have been attached or washed up on the shore. The shipping records for E. & A. Sewall, the builders, owners and managers of Eric the Red, are now preserved in the Maine Maritime Museum. There is no photograph on record of Eric the Red but photographs of other ships built around that time by the same company show that these did not have figureheads, and there is no record found of a figurehead for Eric the Red being ordered or paid for. An anchor with chain is embedded in the rocks east of Point Franklin and a second anchor, thought to be from Eric the Red, is on display at the Cape Otway light station. (There is a photograph of a life belt on the verandah of Rivernook Guest House in Princetown with the words “ERIC THE RED / BOSTON”. This is rather a mystery as the ship was registered in Bath, Maine, USA.) Parts of the ship are on display at Bimbi Park Caravan Park and at Apollo Bay Museum. Flagstaff Hill Maritime Village also has part of the helm (steering wheel), a carved wooden sword (said to be the only remaining portion of the ship’s figurehead; further research is currently being carried out), a door, a metal rod, samples of wood and a medal for bravery. Much of the wreckage was recovered by the local residents before police and other authorities arrived at the scene. Looters went to great effort to salvage goods, being lowered down the high cliff faces to areas with little or no beach to collect items from the wreckage, their mates above watching out for dangerous waves. A Tasmanian newspaper reports on a court case in Stawell, Victoria, noting a man who was caught 2 months later selling tobacco from the wreckage of Eric the Red. Some of the silverware is still treasured by descendants of Mr Mackenzie who was given these items by officials for his help in securing the cargo. The gifts included silver coffee and tea pots, half a dozen silver serviette rings and two sewing machines. The wreck and cargo were sold to a Melbourne man who salvaged a quantity of high quality tobacco and dental and surgical instruments. Timbers from the ship were salvaged and used in the construction of houses and sheds around Apollo Bay, including a guest house, Milford House (since burnt down in bushfires), which had furniture, fittings and timber on the dining room floor from the ship. A 39.7 foot long trading ketch, the Apollo, was also built from its timbers by Mr Burgess in 1883 and subsequently used in Tasmanian waters. It was the first attempt at ship building in Apollo bay. In 1881 a red light was installed about 300 feet above sea level at the base of the Cape Otway lighthouse to warn ships when they were too close to shore; It would not be visible unless a ship came within 3 miles from it. This has proved to be an effective warning. The State Library of Victoria has a lithograph in its collection depicting the steamer Dawn and the shipwrecked men, titled. "Wreck of the ship Eric the Red, Cape Otway: rescue of the crew by the Dawn".The Eric the Red is historically significant as one of Victoria's major 19th century shipwrecks. (Heritage Victoria Eric the Red; HV ID 239) The wreck led to the provision of an additional warning light placed below the Cape Otway lighthouse to alert mariners to the location of Otway Reef. The site is archaeologically significant for its remains of a large and varied cargo and ship's fittings being scattered over a wide area. The site is recreationally and aesthetically significant as it is one of the few sites along this coast where tourists can visit identifiable remains of a large wooden shipwreck, and for its location set against the background of Cape Otway, Bass Strait, and the Cape Otway lighthouse. (Victorian Heritage Database Registration Number S239, Official Number 8745 USA)This carved wooden sword, recovered from the Eric the Red, is possibly the only portion of the figurehead recovered after the wreck. There are spirals carved from the base of the handle to the top of the sword. The hilt of the sword is a lion’s head holding its tail in its mouth, the tail forming the handle. The blade of the sword has engraved patterns on it. Tiny particles of gold leaf and dark blue paint fragments can be seen between the carving marks. There are remnants of yellowish-orange and crimson paint on the handle. At some time after the sword was salvaged the name of the ship was hand painted on the blade in black paint. The tip of the sword has broken or split and the remaining part is charcoal in appearance. On both the tip and the base of the handle are parts made where the sword could have been joined onto the figurehead There is a white coating over some areas of the sword, similar to white lead putty used in traditional shipbuilding. John Glass Cramond 1829 and James Dickson 1831-1910 were founders of a large drapery store. Both were Scots and both came separately to Australia in 1852. Cramond initially came for gold but soon opened a store in St Kilda with a post Office attached and he was the first post master there. Dickson was a farmer’s son but became a draper and while he was unsuccessful on the Bendigo diggings and then returned to Melbourne where he met Cramond and soon after they opened a store on Lonsdale Street. They opened their business in Warrnambool in 1855 as a general store with groceries, drapery and ironmongery. Both partners were involved with the community and James Dickson was an original director of the Warrnambool Woollen Mill 1909 and the Warrnambool Cheese and butter factory. He also served on the committee of management of Warrnambool Base Hospital. This case was a wedding gift from James Dickson Jnr to his wife Mary Glass Cramond on the occasion of their wedding. This item has significance on a number of levels. It belonged to a member of one of Warrnambool’s earliest pioneering families and it marks the occasion when the two families of Cramond and Dickson were linked through the marriage of James Dickson jnr and Mary Glass Cramond. The firm played a significant part in the development of the city and traded for nearly 150 years. It therefore has social significance to Warrnambool. The item is well provenance with the case initialed and items within the case monogrammed. The case and its items are aesthetically quite beautiful as well as being typical of travelling or dressing cases of the more well to do, of the time. Mappin & Webb were manufacturers of some standing with the Mappin name appearing in manufacturing as early as 1775.The company has held a royal warrant as silversmiths since 1897 to the present day and as crown jeweler since 2012. Throughout this time, they have manufactured quality items for the luxury market. It provides an insight into the way ladies travelled and the items which they considered essential. This consists of a black leather with leather handle attached with brass fittings. Middle opening with side pocket on one side with metal catches. Inside has removable sections for holding the numerous containers and items belonging to the case. Interior of the case is dark blue satin. Footwear - Beaded evening shoes, 1888
These shoes were worn by Mary Glass Cramond when she married James Dickson Jnr. in 1888 in the Presbyterian church in South Yarra Melbourne. Mary Cramond was the daughter of John Glass Cramond and his wife Frances. Her Scottish born father formed a partnership with James Dickson, also a Scotsman and founded the Cramond and Dickson store on the corner of Timor and Liebig streets Warrnambool which opened on 21st August 1865. The store closed in 1974. . James Dickson's parents were James and Susan. James Dickson was an original director of the Warrnambool Woollen Mill, an original guarantor and director of the Warrnambool Cheese and Butter Factory. He also served on the committee of the Warrnambool Base Hospital for nearly fifty years and was a town councillor. The Store of Cramond and Dickson was one of the most important businesses ever to have been in Warrnambool. Alphabetical entries about many topics from fruit trees to Legislation, to Senate of America George Rolfe came to Warrnambool in 1872 and by 1883 was well established on the banks of the Hopkins River at Lyndoch. In 1884 he purchased Shipley which also had frontage to the Hopkins River. He participated in the social and sporting life of Warrnambool and was a keen rower.An interesting collection of thoughts and life of one of the early merchants and farmers of the area. Numismatic, Token coin of WW Jamieson. Issued in W'bool 1862, 1862
This is a token made for William Jamieson of Warrnambool in 1862. Tokens were coins made in the mid 1850s to alleviate the shortage of currency coins in Australia. They usually had the value of one penny and could only be used in the store or business designated on the coin. Two Warrnambool businesses had tokens made – those of William Jamieson and William Bateman, Junior. Born in Scotland, William Wilson Jamieson completed an apprenticeship in the ironmongery trade in that country. He worked in the ironmongery business in Melbourne before establishing ironmongery stores in Koroit and Warrnambool (Liebig Street). He was a Warrnambool Councillor (1862 to1874 & 1877 to1880) and Mayor (1866 to 1868 & 1872 to 1873). He was active in many local organizations including the Warrnambool Hospital, the Fire Brigade, the Mechanics Institute, the Villiers Building Society, the Bowling Club and the Caledonian Society. He died in 1882. This token is of great importance as it is an Australian token issued by William Jamieson and Co. of Warrnambool and so is part of the fiscal history of Australia. It is also important as it comes from one of only two businesses in Warrnambool to issue tokens. It is today a rare token. This is a round metal coin (token) with, on one side, an image of a woman holding the scales of justice in one hand and a cornucopia in the other. The other side has lettering. Minutes Book, Melbourne illustrated & Victoria described, c.1885
This book was given to Henry Huntingdon Smith in 1918 by a grateful sister of a soldier killed in World War One. Private Percy Palmer was listed as coming from the Warrnambool area even though his enlistment place was given as Bannockburn. H.H.Smith (1857-1941) is an important figure in Warrnambool’s history. He had a bakery business at the corner of Lava and Fairy Streets. He was a Warrnambool Councillor and Mayor, a Hospital Committee member for 39 years, a Methodist church office-bearer and an active worker for the welfare of local returned soldiers. It was said that he greeted every returning soldier at the Warrnambool Railway Station. Mrs Sharpe was one of those who benefited from his solicitude and kindness. This is book is of antiquarian interest but more importantly it is a lovely memento of Henry Smith’s untiring concern for local soldiers returning from World War One and for their family members. This is a hard cover book of 38 pages. The cover is blue with gold lettering and gold ornamentation on the front and back covers. There are two sepia-coloured photographs of Melbourne at the front of the book and two blue stamps of the Warrnambool and District Historical Society at the front and the back of the book. The pages of the book have become detached from the binding. The inscription at the front of the book is handwritten in purple ink. ‘Melbourne, Aug. 28, 1918, To Mr H. Booklet, Love sweetens truth, 1880s
This book was a prize awarded to Miss Middleton, a pupil at Ormiston House College, East Melbourne in 1887. The Principals of the school were the Misses Singleton and their father, Dr John Singleton was a practising doctor in Warrnambool from 1860 to 1865. He had an important influence on Warrnambool, establishing several Total Abstinence Societies and campaigning for improved health conditions for pastoral workers in the district and the aborigines at Framlingham. In Melbourne Dr Singleton and his wife worked tirelessly for the underprivileged. He established many institutions for the less fortunate, including the Prisoners’ Aid Society, the Children’s Hospital, lending libraries, cottages for widows, shelters for homeless men and women, a society for the protection of animals and the Collingwood Free Medical Dispensary. He died in 1891 at Ormiston House, his daughters’ school and home. It is not known which of the Singleton daughters ran the school and no information has been found on Miss Middleton. This book is of considerable interest as it has a close connection to Dr John Singleton, important not only in the social history of Melbourne but also in the history of Warrnambool. This is a hard cover book of 160 pages with 16 pages at the back of the book of advertisements for other books published by the Religious Tract Society. The cover is brown with a sketch of a young man and lettering in gold and an ornamental floral pattern on the front cover. The gold lettering and the ornamental floral pattern are also on the spine. The book has 13 chapters with ornamental scrolls and initials at the beginning and end of each chapter. There are also some full page black and white sketches in the book, with the one at the front of the book covered by a piece of tissue paper. The book plate at the front of the book is white with a gold border pasted onto the page and handwritten details have been added in black ink. Advertising, Tourist Map of Warrnambool (framed x 2), 1950s
These framed tourist maps came from the Lane Foundation so it is presumed that they were from the office of Lane’s Travel Service which operated from 205 Raglan Parade Warrnambool with the known dates, the 1950s and 1960s. The proprietor, Alan Lane, was a successful Warrnambool businessman who operated a Warrnambool and district bus service as well as his travel business. He was heavily involved in local community affairs being a Warrnambool Councillor for 18 years from 1952 to 1970 and President of the Warrnambool Chamber of Commerce for six years. He was a major donor to the Warrnambool Performing Arts Centre, the Warrnambool Art Gallery and the St. John of God Hospital and left the bulk of his estate to the Alan Lane Foundation which has contributed millions of dollars to local organizations and programs. Alan Lane died in 1995. These framed maps are of some interest as examples of the tourism maps used to promote the city and district in the 1950s and 60s. This is a tourist map of the Warrnambool C.B.D. and adjoining streets produced as an advertisement for Olympic Tyres. It is multi-coloured and has cartoon sketches of the main tourist attractions and pointers to attractions outside of the main city area. It includes an inset black and white photograph of the Warrnambool Botanic Gardens and an advertisement for Olympic Tyres. It is printed on a white background and is enclosed behind glass in a wooden frame of a light brown colour. Book, Grey town, 1922
This is an Irish-Australian novel written in 1922 by Doctor Gerald Baldwin (c.1868-1942). New Zealand born Dr Baldwin was in Warrnambool from about 1900 to 1915. He took over the medical practice and small private hospital of Dr Thomas Scott in Banyan Street, Warrnambool. In 1915 he disposed of the hospital to Sister Ingpen who renamed it ‘Alveston’. Dr Baldwin then practised in Richmond, Melbourne. He wrote novels and plays, with his best-known work being the novel, ‘In Racing Silk’. As well as the novel, ‘Grey Town’, the Historical Society has an original program of a performance in 1914 by the Warrnambool Dramatic Society when Dr Baldwin was in Warrnambool. The program featured a play written by Dr Baldwin, ‘Father O’Flynn’, set partly in Dublin. This book is important because it is a novel written by a local doctor, Gerald Baldwin . He had considerable success with his writings in the early part of the 20th century. This is a hard cover book of 262 pages. It has a red cover with gold and black lettering on the front cover and on the spine. The colouring on the spine is very much faded. She married Ian McKendrick and they lived in Mt Beauty. She worked as a nurse at the Tawonga and District hospital. They had three children: Linda, Robyn and Boyd. Portable Resuscitator Electric Therapy Unit
A shock of different voltages was delivered to a person using the two metal handles or two heavy soft wire combs (missing but known of) were moved across the skin. Perhaps this was an early TENS Unit. The unit came to the donor's grandfather (Roy F. Leibig - Chief Electrical Inspector of the Brunswick (Melbourne) Electric Supply) for repair and returned to his keeping once it had become obsolete (upgraded by newer machine). Donor often helped his Pa repair electrical equipment.Historical: The Resuscitator or Electric Therapy Unit was used in hospitals, possibly Mental hospitals. Provenance: The donor worked at Mt Beauty in the Kiewa Hydro Electric Scheme with the State Electric Commission of Victoria as an electrician. Black wooden smooth box with clip fastener which is screwed on - 3 screws for the base and 2 for the lid. On top of the box is a leather strap for the handle fastened by steel screwed into the box. Inside: A mask with attached strap. Tap fitting loosely into steel box. Metal cylinders and a Cardboard box. The scales were used either at the Tawonga District Hospital or Mt Beauty Medical Centre for weighing a child or small person when standing on the platform. Weights were moved along a rod to balance the person to determine his/her weight.These manual scales were used by doctors to weigh and measure the heights of young patients in the Kiewa Valley and were a necessary piece of equipment to check the health of their patients.Cream metal with height in inches measuring steel rod attached to cylinder. At the top of the cylinder it is hollow for the working of a horizontal scale which has a metal measuring ruler (7 inches) at the end of which is a thin rod hooked on with a round disc at the bottom. At floor level is a platform on a spring on which a child can stand. The stand is surrounded on 3 sides with a thin frame to prevent falling off. Coat Hanger, Cramond & Dickson Folding
John Glass Cramond 1829 and James Dickson 1831-1910 were founders of a large drapery store. Both were Scots and both came separately to Australia in 1852. Cramond initially came for gold but soon opened a store in St Kilda with a post Office attached and he was the first post master there. Dickson was a farmer’s son but became a draper and while he was unsuccessful on the Bendigo diggings and then returned to Melbourne where he met Cramond and soon after they opened a store on Lonsdale Street. They opened their business in Warrnambool in 1855 as a general store with groceries, drapery and ironmongery. Both partners were involved with the community and James Dickson was an original director of the Warrnambool Woollen Mill 1909 and the Warrnambool Cheese and butter factory. He also served on the committee of management of Warrnambool Base Hospital. This coathanger would have been used in their store. Functional object - Silver Card Case (Holmes), Mid 20th century
The owner of this card case was Dr Horace Holmes who was a doctor in Warrnambool for over 40 years. Dr Holmes (1877-1959) was born in Tasmania and completed a medical course at Melbourne University. He came to Warrnambool in 1905, taking over the practice of Dr Fleetwood at ‘Ierne’, at the corner of Spence and Kepler Streets. In 1906 he built a new home at the corner of Liebig Street and Raglan Parade and moved his practice there in 1912 (today this building is the Warrnambool Medical Clinic). Dr Holmes was an honorary Medical Officer at the Warrnambool Hospital. He retired in 1939 selling his practice to Dr Berryman but came out of retirement and practised as a locum until 1944. His interests included rowing golf, bowls and fishing. In the 1950s he lived at ‘Leprena’ in Canterbury Road. He was a foundation member of the Warrnambool Rotary Club. This is a most significant item as it belonged to a prominent local doctor, Dr Horace Holmes. It also has considerable social significance as it is an example of the practice of past times of carrying calling cards and the silver case is a sign of the affluence of the owner. This is a silver card case, heavily embossed, with a slightly curved shape and a hinged lid. It has the initials ‘HIH’ engraved in a shield on the front of the case. It contains nine calling cards (Dr Horace Holmes, Warrnambool). These are made of light card with printing in black on a white background. The cards are somewhat marked and discoloured. This booklet contains the certificates gained by Alfred Brauer in connection with a medical course undertaken at the University of Melbourne (M.B. and B.S). The dates range from 1919 to 1926. Dr Alfred Brauer was a well-known general practitioner in Warrnambool from 1927 to 1972. He was an honorary medical officer at the Warrnambool Hospital and was prominent in sporting and community activities in the city. The former Warrnambool Technical School was re-named Brauer College in 1993 to mark his long association with local education.This set of certificates is an important memento of Dr Alfred Brauer who was a well-known doctor in Warrnambool for 45 years.This is a booklet or folder with a black cover with gold-coloured trimmings and printing. This antique bed pan, an object still in use in a more modern form in hospitals and other institutions, is from the collection of Dr Horace Iles Holmes (1877-1959). He was born and educated in Tasmania and completed a medical degree at the University of Melbourne. He commenced a medical practice in Warrnambool in 1906 and was the Honorary Medical Officer at the Warrnambool Hospital and Warrnambool’s Health Officer. His practice was at ‘Ierne’, at the corner of Spence and Kepler Streets. He was an early member of the Royal Australian College of Surgeons and he was prominent in community affairs in Warrnambool (foundation President of the Warrnambool Rotary Club, a member of the local Masonic Lodge for over 50 years, a long-term Trustee of the Warrnambool Methodist Church, a Warrnambool Hospital Committee member and president of the Lyndoch Hostel for the Aged committee). Dr Holmes enjoyed fishing, bowls and golf. This is a camera that belonged to Dr Horace Iles Holmes (1877-1959). Born and educated in Tasmania, Dr Holmes completed his medical degree at Melbourne University. He commenced a medical practice in Warrnambool in 1906 and was the Honorary Medical Officer at the Warrnambool Hospital and Warrnambool’s Health Officer. His practice was at ‘Ierne’, at the corner of Spence and Kepler Streets. He was an early member of the Royal Australian College of Surgeons and was prominent in community affairs in Warrnambool (foundation President of Warrnambool Rotary Club, a member of the local Masonic Lodge for over 50 years, the Warrnanbool Hospital Committee member, long-term Trustee of the Warrnambool Methodist Church and President of the Lyndoch Hostel for the Aged Committee. Dr Holmes also had agricultural interests and enjoyed bowls, golf and fishing. This is an interesting item as it comes from the Horace Holmes collection and he was a doctor who was prominently associated with the professional and community life of Warrnambool for well over 50 years. .1 This is a camera with an inside concertina mechanism and an outer covering of brown leather and silver-coloured metal. The camera has a leather handle and is scuffed and rusted in parts. .2 The cover is made of brown cloth and has leather tabs on the sides and on the tab fastener. The fastener has a metal buckle. There is a leather strap for carrying the camera and cover over the shoulder. The initials of the owner have been printed in ink on the front of the cover which is worn in places and torn at the bottom corner. The top end has a leather lid attached to the body of the case with a metal pin. The leather attachment here is broken away. On the side of the case is a leather handle. The case is much scuffed. .2 This is a metal tripod with three legs and pointed ends for embedding into the ground area. The three legs sit on a rounded metal top with a screw for attachment to a camera. The metal top has white printing. Thermometer, bath and holder, Early 20th century
This item belonged to Dr Horace Holmes. It is a floating thermometer used to determine when bath water was suitable for use. The reference to Dr Forbes is to John Forbes, a Scottish physician who recommended therapeutic bathing at a time when taking a bath at home or in a hospital was not a common practice (19th century). Typewriter maintenance kit, Early 20th century
This box contains maintenance equipment for a Remington typewriter. The Remington company was founded in U.S.A. and it produced the world’s first typewriter for commercial use in 1873. In 1886 the Remington family business was sold but the name was retained and typewriters with the Remington Rand brand name were sold from 1927 on. Typewriters have now been replaced by computers. This box of equipment belonged to Dr Horace Holmes who would have used a typewriter in his medical practice in Warrnambool in the first half of the 20th century and perhaps would also have used a typewriter in the activities of the many community groups with which he was associated.
