Two small children in doorway, woman holding younger child inside tree, two men either side of image. Both men are wearing suit coats, vests and wearing hats. Straw broom and pots fixed to tree trunk. Man on RH side has an axe to his right. PLEASE NOTE: Letter with photo inquiring about the people in photo, states that the image is that of Peter Tyson, younger brother of James, his wife Margaret Sheil, and their twin daughters, Alice and Harriet. Diary is of accounts with limited text of a written diary on RH wide of sheets. Bookkeeper was Robert Primrose, whose name appears frequently in the book. Further research by Murray Poustie discovered that the photograph may actually be of Nicholas Penny, his wife Eva and their children Charlie, May, George and Nicholas. Also in the photograph on the left is their neighbour, Mr. John Green. The Photograph was taken by Max Lowenhardt when the Penny family was living in the tree at Fumina in 1906-07 following devastating bushfires. Fumina is in timber country at the foot of the Baw Baw Mountains and the area was frequently affected by major bushfires. The photograph was featured on the cover of the Gippsland Heritage Journal No.19, 1996 and is also extensively noted as ''The Penny family's tree home at Fumina'' in other publications including Vision & Realisation.person, receipts -

Photographic Album - 19th Century Portraits. This album is in a handsome leather tooled cover with brass ring clasp - pages have gold edging to match the gold tooling on front cover.This album comes from ''Old Box 94'' which generally contains ephemera from Merle Bush. However, this album has no identifying inscriptions (but see the following notes). There are approx 44 portraits of children, males, females, mixed groups taken by a range of studio photographers (Sandhurst, Melbourne, Stuttgart and possibly from other cities?) There appear to be no inscriptions on the reverse of these photos - but not all have been removed for checking. One photograph (R Dermer Smith, Sandhurst has a photograph Number #753 on reverse and show a man/boy?, woman and child on the front verandah of a house. There are 6 loose cards within the book which may give some indication as to the family connection; 1. Mr W Tainsh - Echuca; 2. Frau Pastor Leypoldt - Lutheran Parsonage, Bendigo; 3. Copy of a black and white photograph of four women, one seated on a central chair, with flowers, and two small children. A boy and a girl. On the reverse the Queen, seated, is identified as Gwen McPherson (Mr McPherson, her father, was a senior policeman in Golden Square). The small girl, front right, is named as June McLean, daughter of Nellie and Tom McLean, United Kingdom Hotel, Golden Square. [Note: Peter MOLONEY, Gwen's son emailed [email protected] 13/10/2014 after the photo appeared in the Bendigo Advertiser, 'The Way We Were’ - 'Hi, please have a look at the attached photo. My name is Peter Moloney, Gwen McPherson’s son; my grandfather was a policeman at Golden Square from about 1935 to 1945. My mother was born in 1920. Given all the information above and also the fact that the 'Queen' in the photo does not look like my mother, who would have been 9 years old in 1929, I am afraid the detail on the photo is incorrect.
