Photo during the early to mid 1940's. Tram has an Auxiliary board "Via Dandenong Rd" and showing, Route 67. At the time, Route 67 ran from St Kilda ran from Balaclava Junction to St Kilda, Acland St via Dandenong Road. Ceased in 1955. See Reg item 815 for details. Large residence on large elevated block for Frederick Christian Lange (1832-1888) and family in 1870. The architect Lloyd Tayler (1830-1900) designed it in an Italianate style. Over time adjoining allotments were purchased until the gardens covered nearly 15 acres. Lange was in partnership with Emil Thoneman trading under the name of Lange & Thoneman, merchants and general importers. Lange was also one of the local directors of the local Australasian directors for the Swiss Lloyd Marine Insurance Company. William Officer (1835-1913), pastoralist, bought the property from Lange in 1888 for 23,500 pounds. Following Officer's death the grounds were subdivided in 1914 and the house finally demolished in 1940. Photograph, Black and White, of the Level Crossing in Epsom Road, Flemington or Ascot Vale showing the overhead arrangement and structures either side of the road to provide power to either the trams or the trains. The small signal box is in the view as well as the interlocked gates. A NMETL saloon tram is crossing the railway lines. Photo late 1919 or 1920. Has the words "VR Tramway Crossing at Epsom Rd showing insulators in tram line and special crossing fitting." The level crossing was electrified on 18-8-1919 and abolished mid 1925 when the underpass was built. See Weekly Notice Extracts 1894-1994, published 1996.In ink on the rear: "Melbourne - North Melbourne Electric Tramway and Lighting Co. Ltd - No. 4 in Epsom Road on level crossing to Showrooms and Flemington Racecourse. About 1919-1920." Photo shows a person wearing what appears to be a Brisbane tramway cap tying down trolley pole for return trip to City. Comment from Tony Smith of the MTPA, that it could be Travis Jeffery. Email from Len Millar - 7-2-2019 - "As best as I can decipher by enlarging the image, it does look like a young Travis. The long-ish face was my guide. Brisbane hat – and tying a pole down on a service car in busy Toorak Road? J.L.Smith was an early settler in East Brighton now Bentleigh and established successful Wood cutting, Grain & Chaff cutting and Motor garage businesses in Centre Road . He was elected Councillor of the Shire of Moorabbin and, with Mary Ann, his family were involved with local Church, Red Cross, and other community organizations. Herbert John Higgins ran a dairy farm with 40 cows on some acres fronting Jasper Rd ( Higgins Rd today ) he grew corn crops to feed his herd and also bought grain from J L Smith.Herbert Higgins , Dairy farmer, along with the Allnutt, and Long families were members of the Methodist Church Bentleigh from 1880s and involved in community organizations, J.L.Smith was an early settler in East Brighton now Bentleigh and established successful Wood cutting, Grain & Chaff cutting and Motor garage businesses in Centre Road . "I've seen a tram go up in the air" by Rachel Wells & Tate Papworth Tram derailment in Cotham Rd, Kew, caused when a car collided with the 109 tram causing it to crash through a fence. About 20 people were on the tram, with two being taken to hospital. Two occupants from the car were also taken to hospital. Tram was taken back to the depot for investigation. "'Cheap as chips' Kew tram's horrid history" by Zach Hope & Tate Papworth Tram 3011 has been involved in at least 3 derailments according to Yarra Trams.
