The medal was presented to Captain Thos. Smith (Thomas Smith) for his assistance in saving the crew of the wrecked barque, the Eleanor Lancaster, at Newcastle in N.N.S.W. (New South Wales). The ship was wrecked during a storm on November 7th, 1856. This medal is significant as a form of recognition of the bravery of Captain Thos Smith.Medal; round, silver, with silver rope border, anchor and rope decoration on top and central inscription on the front, plain back.
