This six-postcard group is the seventh in a series of records of items in the collection of Edgar Dawson DCM. Dawson was the Regimental Sergeant Major of 57th Battalion, AIF. C Company of the 57th was composed of men drawn from Echuca, Eaglehawk and Bendigo. The postcards are from his personal album, and many are annotated in Dawson's hand with explanatory notes on the subject. Refer to Cat No 893 for his service details. Items originally in album cat. no. 207P These postcards illustrate the links between battalions, such as the 5th and 47th. 1. Group portrait of the Officers and NCOs of C Company, 47th Battalion. 47th Btn was drawn from Queensland and Tasmania, and C company was primarily Queenslanders. 2. Group photo of the signallers and stretcher bearers of 5th Battalion. Dawson note that Josiah and Norman Rolls, from Golden Square in Bendigo, are in photograph. 3. Group photograph of 57th Battalion medal recipients taken outside Exeter cathedral. 4. 57th Btn band 5 HQ Pioneers, 57th Btn, 8th of October 1917. Printed under top photo 'Eaglehawk State School. The total attendance at the Eaglehawk State is 37-, with 180 boys and 190 girls. The staff consists of the head teacher, one male assistant, seven female assistants, and three junior teachers. Bendigo Advertiser ''The way we were'' from 2000. Wares: an array of products sits outside the Bendigo Pottery in 1930. The pottery was established in 1857 on the left bank of Bendigo Creek, near the junction of Eaglehawk Creek, and was brought to prominence in 1968 when then owner George Guthrie was awarded two gold medals at the Intercolonial Exhibition in Melbourne. By 1870, the pottery was producing a wide range of items, from stoneware pipes to spirit bottles. The pottery still operates at Epsom today. The Nineteenth Edition of the Bendigo and Districts Universal Business Directory, which is Section 3 of the Victorian Country Directory for 1969. The directory includes classified sections for Bendigo and surrounding towns, including Carisbrook, Castlemaine, Eppalock, Harcourt, Malmsbury, Maryborough, Newbridge, Raywood, Tooborac and Yapeen. It also includes an Eaglehawk Traders section, emergency phone numbers and maps of Bendigo, Castlemaine, Kangaroo Flat and Maryborough. Three photographs taken by a commercial photographer in Killarney Ireland. These photographs illustrate how men from different units relaxed together on leave. 1. A group of AIF soldiers enjoying leave outside the Graham Hotel, Killarney. The soldier on left is a corporal in 2nd Division Pioneers, next to him is a private in the 1st Division, then a signaller from 5th Division with two years' overseas service chevrons and two wound stripes, RSM Hector Dawson, 57th Btn, then a Gallipoli veteran with what seems to be a Fifth Division patch, unknown, and lastly a 1st Division sergeant. 2. A relaxed group outside the Graham Hotel. RSM Dawson is third from the right. Second from the left is an officer of the Canterbury Infantry Regiment, New Zealand Expeditionary Force. 3. RSM Dawson (hatless) and comrades setting off to likely see the famous local lakes. J A Eden (Clothier) was first listed in Pall Mall in 1895. The Surprise Shop was located on the third block Pall Mall Bendigo, next to the Lyceum Store. John A Eden (Draper) listed at the corner of Bath Lane and Mitchell Street from 1898. J A Eden retired from business in 1904. A sale of men's clothing, hosiery, hats, underwear and general clothing of every description was conducted by Mr J H Curnow on the premises in Eaglehawk. William Wilkie was born in Eaglehawk in 1869. William was only twelve years old when he took on the responsibilities of providing for his mother and five brothers and sisters after the death of his father from miners phthisis in 1881. William moved interstate to take up mining in Western Australia in the 1890's, returning to Bendigo to continue mining in the district. William married Mary Clough in 1896. Elected to council for the first time in 1905, Cr Wilkie served as Mayor on two occasions. 1910 - 1911 and 1914 - 1915. Black and white mayoral portrait of Councillor William Wilkie.
