Book, Shakespeare Head, Pathfinder : a war autobiography, 1958
I was posted to 29 Squadron at North Weald in Essex and I was more than pleased to be a 'fighter boy', which for some unknown reason seemed and still seems to carry with it an aura of glamour - goodness knows why! "Air Vice-Marshal Don Bennett was one of the most outstanding figures of the second World War and the creator and leader of the legendary Pathfinder Force of 8 Group. His made him the obvious choice as leader of the Pathfinders -the elite force designed to carry out pioneering target-marking and precision-bombing of Nazi-occupied Europe. Bennett played a prominent part in deploying a Mosquito intruder force to harass Germany by night and in developing FIDO, the invaluable fog dispersal system.Ill, p.287.non-fictionI was posted to 29 Squadron at North Weald in Essex and I was more than pleased to be a 'fighter boy', which for some unknown reason seemed and still seems to carry with it an aura of glamour - goodness knows why! Book, Angus and Robertson, Horrie the wog-dog, 1955
The true story of Horrie the Wog-Dog who was adopted by the Australian Signal Platoon of the M/G Battalion, in spite of all rules against keeping pets, and how Horrie not only won his stripes as a valuable addition to the group but had the further distinction of being smuggled into Australia on their return. The Wog-Dog was sneaked into Greece, went through the evacuation, carried messages as well as proving a dependable warning against air attacks. He went to Syria and Palestine, never learning to tolerate Arabs - he suffered cold and sickness, he fell in love with Ishmi, he was bombed off his ship and he never once was found during all necessary cover-up travelling. A story for all dog lovers, in spite of heavy Australian slang and style, of a dinkum Aussie who was kept, protected and loved by dinkum Aussies. Sentimentality over canines seldom misses fire.Ill, p.232non-fictionThe true story of Horrie the Wog-Dog who was adopted by the Australian Signal Platoon of the M/G Battalion, in spite of all rules against keeping pets, and how Horrie not only won his stripes as a valuable addition to the group but had the further distinction of being smuggled into Australia on their return. Book - The Great Escape, Faber & Faber, 1951
With only their bare hands and the crudest of homemade tools, they sank shafts, built underground railroads, forged passports, drew maps, faked weapons, and tailored german uniforms and civilian clothes. They developed a fantastic security system to protect themselves from the German "ferrets" who prowled the compounds with nerve-racking tenacity and suspicion. It was a split-second operation as delicate and as deadly as a time bomb.Ill, p.263.non-fictionWith only their bare hands and the crudest of homemade tools, they sank shafts, built underground railroads, forged passports, drew maps, faked weapons, and tailored german uniforms and civilian clothes. Book, James Y Harvey, Mercy trains, 2001
'Mercy trains - Australian Army Ambulance trains during World War II recounts the hitherto untold story of trains provided by Australia's State railway departments to convey the tens of thousands of the armed force's sick and wounded needing transportation across the continent. Conceived as large-scale ambulances to evacuate battle casualties suffered on Australian soil in the event of a landing by enemy forces, their role changed when Australia was spared the trauma of invasion. Instead, the trains becam mobile hospitals: their task to convey invalids from all allied (and enemy) forces to medical centres throughout the nation. One major assignment was to bring south from Queensland casualties evacuated from the battlefields of Papua-New Guinea, whose numbers reached crisis proportions at the close of 1942 and into early 1943. The trains were operated by United States Army personnel for twelve months, one in New South Wales and one in Queensland. Author Jim Harvey spent three years searching through Army (both Australian and U.S.) and railway department files and what he found was a story of demanding military, a penny-pinching government prepared to endanger the lives of train staff rather than permit necessary improvements, some railway operating problems, fires, more than a fair share of floods, a bombing attack, examples of a generosity from caring local communities, a dexicated staff of doctors, nurses, medical orderlies and cooks, supported at all times by sympathetic railwayment of all grades.'
