Part of the Wagga collection. Maker unknown, c. early 1940s. Possibly from South Australia. This 'travelling rug' was found in an opportunity shop in Campbell's Creek near Castlemaine in Victoria. Unfortunately, nothing is known about the maker but it could be surmised that the quilt had many uses. It is heavy and designed for warmth, lined with a woollen blanket and hessian. Its size suggests usage in an open buggy or car when travelling or as a picnic rug along the way. The sturdy canvas backing is of the type commonly used for awnings, chair coverings or tent cloth. The quality of the green velvet made it ideal for further use as a quilt after the original use as an overcoat or smoking jacket for either a man or a woman. Apart from the original machine stitched seams in the garment, it is sewn together by hand using herringbone stitch. It is not known if this quilt was designed to be used with a cover. Part of the Zakrzewski Collection of spinning wheels donated to the National Wool Museum by Mr Wlodzimierz Zakrzewski. For many years, Mr Zakrzewski collected, researched and repaired spinning wheels from all over the world. This wheel is from Yugoslavia and dates from the early 20th century. It is made from Poplar Alba. The treadle bar runs obliquely from beneath the right arm of the T-shaped base to beneath the stem of the T. The mounting of the wheel and the flyer mechanism are reversed. This is in order that flax may be spun with one hand or that plying may be done. Part of the Zakrzewski Collection of spinning wheels donated to the National Wool Museum by Mr Wlodzimierz Zakrzewski. For many years, Mr Zakrzewski collected, researched and repaired spinning wheels from all over the world. This is a German wheel for spinning flax and it dates from the 19th century. The plaque on the back gives the name of the original owner: Anna Dorothea Adelheid Gruther from Orbinghausen, Germany. The date presumably refers to when she was given the wheel. The Beauglehole Collection is held in the FedUni Science Herbarium (Mt Helen Y Building). Cliff Beauglehole (1920-2002) was an orchardist at Portland, Victoria. Over his lifetime he collected over 90,000 plant specimens as part of a comprehensice study of Victoria's plans, and wrote thirteen books under the title "The Distribution and Conservation of Vascular Plants in Victoria. Originally held by the Ballarat Field Naturalists Club, this set of herbarium specimens are from Cliff Beauglehole's collections in the Ballarat area. The club decided to hand over the plant collection to the University of Ballarat (now Federation University). They were freeze-dried to kill unwanted insects and are now house in a climate conrolled room, and available to students, staff and others for scientific study. The Wodonga Historical Society Haeusler Collection provides invaluable insight into life in late nineteenth and early twentieth century north east Victoria. The collection comprises manuscripts, personal artefacts used by the Haeusler family on their farm in Wodonga, and a set of glass negatives which offer a unique visual snapshot of the domestic and social lives of the Haeusler family and local Wodonga community. The Haeusler family migrated from Prussia (Germany) to South Australia in the 1840s and 1850s, before purchasing 100 acres of Crown Land made available under the Victorian Lands Act 1862 (also known as ‘Duffy’s Land Act’) in 1866 in what is now Wodonga West. The Haeusler family were one of several German families to migrate from South Australia to Wodonga in the 1860s. The textiles in the Haeusler collection belonged to Ilma Margaret Ernestine Haeusler (née Tasker), born in 1900 in Tallangatta. These textiles were handmade by Ilma between 1919 and 1928 for use in the family home during her marriage to Louis Alfred Haeusler (b.1878). Ilma died in childbirth in 1928, leaving one surviving son, John Alfred Lyell (b.1922). In the nineteenth and early twentieth century prior to the mass production of clothing and textiles, needlework, alongside motherhood, was the defining work of women. Hand sewing and embroidery was central in the everyday lives and domestic roles of women.The item is handmade and unique, with well documented provenance. It forms part of a significant and representative historical collection which reflects the local history of Wodonga. It contributes to our understanding of domestic and family life in early twentieth century Wodonga, as well as providing interpretative capacity for themes including local history, social history, and women’s history.
