It is though this image was taken not long after Harry Arblaster became Principal at the Ballarat School of Mines. There were very few occasions when staff were required to wear an academic gown. It would take a woman hours to hook all of the buttons on her gloves.Glove hooks were the solution to this.They came in all shapes and sizes.Some could be carried around in a purse and used whenever it was necessary. These hooks made dressing easier and faster for decades, before they started to go out of use after World War I. The glove hook is an example of a gadget designed to make life simpler and to highlight the sophistication and refinement of the owner. The origin of debutante balls was that the woman was old enough to be married, and part of the purpose of her coming out was to display her to eligible bachelors and their families with a view to marriage within a select circle. Harriett Wilson was the wife of William Wilson, an active member of and preacher with the Linton Methodist congregation. This is one of two photographs of Mrs Wilson in the collection. This one appears to have been taken earlier than the other. The other photograph is Registration no. 480 (Box 14, also Mounted photograph 21), and shows a somewhat older Mrs Wilson, although Mrs Wilson is wearing the same dress in both photographs. An inscription on the back of the photograph says that this photograph was given by Mrs Wilson to F. Bryant on December 16, 1890. Mrs Wilson died in a fire in 1900 and is buried in Linton cemetery.
