In 1926 Norman Armstrong took over the business but retained the original name. Bernard O'Dowd was an Australian poet and anarchist. He was born in Beaufort in 1866 and worked at different times as a teacher, librarian and parliamentary draftsman. He was dismissed from his position at St Alipius' school in Ballarat for heresy. He had a particular interest in the Federation of Australia and formation of the Constitution, which features in his poem "Australia". O'Dowd co-edited Tocsin with Jack Andrews. Tocsin was a labor newspaper in Melbourne. Others involved with the newspaper include Edward Findley and, for a short time, Norman Lindsay. The young lady in the photograph is Sophia Alice Victoria Benzley who was born on 16th December 1974 at he Gap and died in Carlton 0n 12 December 1956 at Sandringham. At the age of twenty five she married Norman henry Hallo in 1897 at Carlton. The couple had eight children. They were Hilda b. 1899, Norman 1901 - 1979, Olive 1903 - 1958, Howard b.1905, Thelma b. 1907, Leonard b. 1911, Beryl b. 1913 and Constance b. 1916. The Benzley family acquired land and settled in Sunbury in the mid 1800s. Later generations of the family lived at 7 Barkly Street opposite the former Sunbury State School and had a little shop. This piece was given to servicemen to commemorate service, in each unit that they served. A bronze mounted on a wooden plaque, with the insignia of the Royal Airforce Squadron 14, and Arabic Script that translates to 'I spread my wings and keep my promise.'On the back of the plaque in black pen is marked 'On permanent loan from: 543369 Norman Storey, RAF, 14 Bomber Squadron M.E 1940 - 1943'. Rows of graves from the Battle of Fromelles, then called Flerbaix. Among the graves is that of Captain Norman Gibbins, 55th Battalion, born in Ararat Victoria. A Gallipoli veteran, at Fromelles, Gibbins fought a desperate rear guard bombing action while under heavy German attack. It allowed many Australians including the wounded to get back to the safety of their own lines. When his path was blocked by dead and wounded Gibbins stood up and was fatally shot. Some of these were founding legatees. Melbourne Legacy provided camps for junior legatees - the children of deceased servicemen. It started in the early years of Legacy with outings to the property of Legacy founder, Legatee Stan Savige, who had a place in Balnarring. Permanent camp buildings were built in the 1930s. Photograph of a Santa Claus delivering presents to Junior Legatees from an biplane aircraft. Inscription says it was a Junior Legatee outing in approximately 1946, and took place at Laverton airport. An article on Trove confirms it was 14th December 1946. The photo was from a collection of items belonging to Norman Smith of the ILC. The Intermediate Legacy Club was created for junior legatees who had reached the age of 18 and outgrew the program Legacy provided to junior legatees.
