Eight (8) Digital images taken by George Coop during the period 1968 - 1970, of trams at the City Loop. .1 - 33, 17 and two other single truckers parked in the loop with motor vehicles and parking meters. No. 33 has an Eureka Roofing Tile Advert. .2 - 28? passing two track workers cleaning the west end points with a bogie car and three single truckers in the loop. In the background are Patersons and Dickins Food Store. .3 - No. 12 parked at the east end of the loop, hard up against the tram in front. Shows the Section Insulator. .4 - As for .1, front on photo with the destination of City and a "Pay as You Enter". The Dickins sign can be seen. .5 - as for .2, No. 35 leads the queue. Has the Woolworths Big W store in the background. .6 - view from the rear (12, 30, 17) with No. 33 being driven out of the loop. .7 - View from the rear, 33 has moved out of view. Has the T&G (Temperance and General) building in the view. .8 - No. 31 moves over the points at the west end of the loop. Trams tramways ...Yields information about Ballarat 17 in an accident with a bus used a doughnut kitchen and S.E. Dickins Store, Bridge St Ballarat.Set of four images of photographs (two each same, different exposure) of Black and white photographs of SEC Tram 17 and a former bus used a food vendors stand, that have finished up in the front of S.E. Dickins Pty Ltd. (Grocers) store c1949. The tram derailed at the intersection of Sturt and Grenville St. collided with the bus and pushed it into the front of the store. Many people standing around the incident, including two trammies in front of the tram. Uniform - Cap, Commonwealth Government Clothing Factories Melbourne, 1960's
Demonstrates uniform cap manufacture, badge and has a strong association with a former Ballarat Driver - Norm HuntSEC Motorman/Drivers/Conductors cap - green cloth exterior, grey cotton interior lining, brown leather internal hat band, black cotton hat band on exterior with a plastic band at the front half of the cap terminating in two small SEC metal buttons on either side, black plastic peak fitted with cap or badge No. 20, nickel plated silver, in the centre of the cap above the hat band. Sewn on the inside is a label "Commonwealth Government Clothing Factories Melbourne (very faded)" and stamped "6 3/4". See also Reg. Item 3044 for an ex Geelong cap. Sixteen page book or booklet printed on A4 white paper, folded to A5 with saddle bound staples, titled "Ballarat's Tramway Preservation Project". Written by Campbell Duncan for the BTPS c1978, giving details of the history of Ballarat's tramways, and a brief history of Geelong and Bendigo, the formation and operations of the BTPS and the tramcar fleet. Has 10 photographs, 1 sketch of the front of a maximum traction tramcar and a map of the BTPS location on the rear. Map drawn by G. Inglis 2.73. Note no credits for photographs. See image files for photos used in book. Contains information on research design, data analysis, results, conclusions and recommendations, list of references, exhibits, tables, data summaries, copies of newspaper items and background material. Wal Jack's caption advises the Bedford van was a doughnut kitchen. 1020.1 - added 3/06/2006 - small newspaper cutting with the same photo and a caption "While the driver was picking up lunch at Ashkar's pie shop, his tram ploughed into Dickin's grocery, on the present site of Norwich Plaza". Negatives No. N356 and N357and black and white prints made by a laser printer (stored in folder ) of tram SW6's 888 and 887 at the Victoria Parade crossover, near Nicholson St, reversing as part of journey travelling to Preston Depot on AETA tour (Australian Electric Traction Association) on 25/6/1955. 1617.1 - 887 closest to camera, 888 in distance. 1617.2 - crew standing in front of 887. Dave Macartney advised 12/1/2001 that the crew member on the left is Sam Serman, who was senior inspector at the time and drove special trams. Set of 8 black and white photographs of the SEC Ballarat track welding truck, Reg. No. 119 341. Truck is a British Bedford truck, model WHG, built by GMH Melbourne between 1932 and 1934. Has a fabric roof, chassis fitted with a tray top body, side tool box, metal frame and covered with canvas, fitted out with a motor generator set, welding equipment and oxy acetylene bottles. Also fitted with a spot light - 'Auto Reel Lite". - See Related Items sheet on truck notes provided by Kevin Oates, MFESB workshops, 4/2001. (Scan of this sheet of the Kodak folder added 15-8-2017 - see pdf file.) 1705.1 - side on view of truck with covers down, except for opening at back. Thought to be photographed at loop in Wendouree Parade on the View Point line, near Mill St. Prints when donated to the BTM were contained within a red and yellow "Kodak" folder. Folder stored with catalogue worksheet. On rear of folder in ink is number "53569" and stamped on the front is number "984" and written in front top left hand cover, "8 prints" and in top right hand corner word "Sarah". A survey of Wendouree Parade on 22/4/2001 did not show the boat sheds or power lines featured in the photographed. Later replaced with black letters on white background. Has Morseheads shop on the left hand side, Coles store and Christmas decorations in the street. The driver of the car in front of the tram is giving a hand signal - STOP! Book, State Electricity Commission of Victoria (SECV), Instructions or Rules to Motormen, post 1945
Handmade book with light green covers made from a cut file holder with brown paper glued on the inside, containing 39 typed (original) sheets of paper giving Instructions or Rules to Motormen. Has five page index, then 34 pages, with 104 rules or instructions, covering Tramcar Equipment (electrical), location of faults, tramcar braking, failure of the mechanical brakes, tramcar emergency braking, automatic braking, automatic electric signals and general instructions for Ballarat. The brown paper appears to have been placed on the outside, as it is cut and glued on the inside of the book. Individual sheets held into the book with a metal clip. On the rear of the book, a small piece of cardboard has been glued over the back of the metal strip. Notes mentions bogie trams, so therefore post 1945. Gives details of route electric signals, use of doors on the trams relevant to the central median strip. On page 4, has hand drawn diagram showing the motors in series and parallel. On page 8 has a hand drawn diagram showing the car lighting circuit arrangements. Has been folded in the middle so as to store in pockets of a coat. Black & White photograph (reproduction) of Electric Supply Co. (ESCo) tram no. 13 near tram depot, Wendouree Parade, c1905. Photo made from a copy negative of an original held in the Archives. Tram not yet fitted with destination boxes. On front of tram is a driver, possibly an inspector by the ground, at rear is a conductor, two ladies seated on rear end and a gentleman on the front seat. Houses in background. Image is not full size to the photographic print. Tram lettered 'Ballarat Tramways' 2nd copy made for No. 12 display - 3/99.
