This diary was kept by Captain Richard Farrell, who served in the Royal Australian Army Ordnance Corps, 2nd Composite Ordnance Depot from 11 March 1967 until 26 Feb 1968 covers the dates 04/02/68 until his departure(which includes the time of Tet Offensive). In addition to recording his day-to-day activities, he details his involvement in collecting evidence for the Court Martial of Private Knight of 2nd Advanced Ordnance Depot, Catering Corps. Knight was charged with 'grievous wounding' for the stabbing with a bayonet of Corporal Holt during a fight in/around the canteen known as the Arnold Club on 22 October 1967. BDSC - Bendigo & District Servicemen's Club. The Servicemen's Club 73 - 75 Havilah Rd was a Co - Operative of the 3 Bendigo RSL's being Bendigo, Kangaroo Flat & Eaglehawk Sub Branches. In 1977 the Bendigo, Eaglehawk, Kangaroo Flat RSL Co operative Society Ltd was formed with Mr Des Paterson as Chairman and Mr Jack Barnes as Secretary. The Co op owned the facility and the Bendigo & District Servicemen's Club was formed to operate the facility. It was built in 1978 and a liquor license was finally granted in August 1979 and opened. It was officially opened on December 19th 1979 by the Hon R.J. Hamer premier of Victoria. In the year 2000 the premises became the Bendigo District RSL Sub Branch Inc. Des Paterson was also on the of the BDSC Committee until 1984. He was heavily involved in the establishment of the BDSC. The pages shown are a small selection of the Album. Photos cover Skill at Arms, relaxing, socializing, parade ground, weapons display, bush time and The 8th Battalion Colours/on parade. The Album belonged to Graeme Arthur Jones, enlisted on 1.2.1967 in the 1st Intake National Service for that year. He was posted to 1 PL A Coy 2RTB Regt No 3790932. After initial training he would be posted to A Coy 8 RAR. 8 RAR had deployed to Malaya in Oct 1967. Graemes National Service was completed and he was discharged on 31.1.1969. His service with 8 RAR was 1 year 93 days. A number of people have been identified in the album by a former A Coy Member. In one photo: Sgt Ebner, Barry Popworth, R Venables, George Newton. On an other photo has Keith Boase. A collection of 5 manuals for a range of Clyde Diesel Locomotives. The collection includes instructions for the Clyde G8B, G16C, G26C, 1800 HP Model A and the Clyde Mailiner Model 2. On the cover of each manual, the owner has written the letter for the name of class which the relevant locomotive was ascribed in Victoria. The Clyde Engineering Company Limited was registered on 30 September 1898 in New South Wales. It was one of the iconic Australian engineering firms whose history spanned just over a century and was one of the few locomotive and rolling stock builders in the world that transitioned from steam to diesel to electric traction. The company was formed by Walter Maplesden Noakes who purchased the works of Hudson Brothers Limited in the Sydney suburb of Granville, which had been established by in 1882. The manuals refer to the following locomotives:- Clyde Model G8B which operated in Victoria as the new T class locomotive. It was introduced in 1955 and was the most numerous class of diesel locomotive used in Victoria. This model continued in operation until 1968, although many were modified for continued service. Clyde Model G16C, later superseded by the G26C operated in Victoria as the X class locomotive between 1966 and 1976. Clyde Model 1800HP Model A became the S class locomotives in Victoria. Additional numbers were purchased in preparation for the opening of the standard gauge line between Melbourne and Albury, They entered service between 1957 and 1961. Clyde Mainline Model 2 became the B class in Victoria. The B class were the first mainline diesel-electric locomotives in Victoria entering service in June 1952. They were initially used on the main passenger and freight services, before moving out to other areas. MU100F - membership and competition. 1966-67 winners in "B" Class - Loyal Orbost Lodge.Friendly Societies were founded in the Australian Colonies in the mid-19th Century by immigrants from England who had been members in Societies which dated back to the 18th Century. Like all working people these immigrants experienced sickness, accidents, unemployment, death and burial. They needed help of like fellows to tide their families over these times. So they formed a branch of one of the Friendly Societies back in the mother country. The idea was to make fixed contributions to a fund and when they were off work they would receive a payment. When they died funeral benefits would be paid and the widow and children would be cared for. It was a form of local insurance for hard times. This was a time of 'look after yourself' as the Colonial Governments did not provide pensions or benefits.
