Photograph is of Mary Gundry (nee Watson)Mary Gundry was the wife of Joseph Gundry, She was born on 23 July 1816 in Hobart Town and married Joseph at Hamilton, Tasmania. She died in 1905 and is buried at Jan Juc. (Bellbrae). Her grandmother was Rachel Hoddy who was transported to Australia on the Lady Juliana in the Second Fleet. The women of the Second Fleet were transported and recruited to Sydney to restore the imbalance to "civilise" the colony. Rachel married Isaac Williams who had been transported to Norfolk Island and later Tasmania. Her child Hannah Williams as the first generation would be referred to as a Currency Lass. She later married a convict Richard Watson. Hannah is buried at Watsons Marsh in the Derwent Valley in Tasmania. Their child Mary was to become Mary Gundry. Joseph and Mary arrived in Victoria with two children, John William and Joseph James. Mary had another child, Mary, when she married Joseph.Charles was the first child born at Jan Juc in 1844. William Richard Gundry ,was born at Peubla (Torquay) in 1860 married Anna Mariah Tomamicheal . He was the sixth child ofJoseph and Mary . William was on the Barrabool Council for in excess of thirty years . The historic item in the entry room was presented to William on his retirement from the council .He died at Jan Juc in 1941 and is burried at the Bellbrae Cemetery . -

Photograph shows Llanberris House, built by Joseph and Mary Gundry on Iron Bark Station, west of the Anglesea Geelong Road, off Menzels Road above Spring Creek. The Gundrys took up Iron Bark station in 1844 and subsequently bought up more surrounding land. Just prior to Joseph's death in 1878, the property comprising 7721 acres was offered for sale as well as conditional rights to adjoining land. Llanberis House was a substantial stone dwelling of 2 storeys with 11 rooms.The Gundry family was one of the pioneering European settlers in the Bellbrae Torquay area.Black and white photographbellbrae victoria pioneer families -

Photographs donated by Valda ConnellyGundry descententsIron Bark Station was purchased by Joseph Gundry in 1844 The property consisted of 7721 acres plus conditional rights to adjoining properties.The station housed 6000 sheep and 60 cattle . In the top left hand corner of the photograph you can see the LLAMBERIS House built by Joseph Gundry. It was thought that later the property was sold and Roderick Impey Murchison was the buyer,he later offered it for sale in 1885 and later that year A N Hassall invited tenders for lots of Liamberis.C j Cook was the listed owner in 1888 ( land of the Magpie) -

Photograph shows members of the Bubb family cutting ironbark logs in the Anglesea forest for their sawmill. The sawmill was established after WW2 to provide work for his sons. The sons who worked at the mill were Arthur, Harold (aka Jimmy), and Robert all of whom are buried at Bellbrae cemetery. Photograph is a studio portrait of George "Pop" Dridan and his wife, early settlers at Bellbra.George Dridan and his wife came to Bellbrae from Amphitheatre and purchased a small farm in Menzal Road Jan Juc. Their daughter Lena married William Cunningham who ran the Bellbrae Post Office and Store from 1940 to 1973. Text Record, An Introduction to the Torquay Surf Lifesaving Club 70th Anniversary Exhibition 2015, 2015
The Torquay Life Saving Club was formed in 1922. Members operated from a large bathing box on the Torquay front beach. Eventually at a meeting at the Palace Hotel in January 1946, it was resolved to form the Torquay Surf Club but the name was changed to Torquay Surf Lifesaving Club on 20 February 1946. Building of the first clubhouse was completed in 1946. The first 50 years of the Club are chronicled in a book by Ken Pollard held by the TDHS and which is catalogued under Item 00012 in this catalogue.The formation of the Torquay Surf Lifesaving Club in 1946 and the establishment of a permanent clubhouse was the culmination of the efforts of members and friends of the Torquay Lifesaving Club over the previous quarter of a century.
