Max COWARD ( -1991) Born Ballarat Max Coward was training to be an art teacher at the Ballarat Technical Art School from 1937 to 1941. He enlisted in the A.I.F. and was a Naval Trainee at Flinders Naval Depot in 1941. During these years Max Coward was described as a cartoonist and illustrator, and was attached to the Naval Intelligence Division in 1945, producing stories and drawings for the Navy newspaper Dit. His work was reproduced in the Christmas annual, HMAS Mk IV and the Army educational journal, Salt. Coward was active as a printmaker in the 1970s. This item is part of the Federation University Art Collection. This is a most comprehensive and succinct history of the Palmer/Wood family and their descendants from 1838 to 2013. Several members of the Palmer family were prominent in the history of Warrnambool and district. These include Octavius Palmer of Waarn, Claude Palmer of Dalvui, William Palmer, Manager of the Bank of Australasia in the 1860s and Thomas Palmer of Grasmere. The noted novelist, Mary Gaunt, who lived in Warrnambool for some time, was the granddaughter of Frederick and Mary Palmer. These biographical notes of the Palmer family are of some significance as they will be very useful for researchers.These are 13 pages of printed notes enclosed in a folder with a clear plastic front cover and a black plastic back cover. Robert Anderson and wife migrated to Australia in 1856 and moved to Phillip Island about 1870 - 71. His descendants are tabulated with some brief history of them. On one Family Tree it has that Robert Coxon Anderson married Margaret Sharpe in 1855 then Bessy Flemming after Margaret died. In another Family Tree the 2nd wife is noted as Annie Grant marrying Robert in 1891. Photograph - Family Portrait, Captain John Marshall and Family, Mayor of Kew 1872-73, 1890s
Captain John Marshall was born in Dundee, Scotland c.1833. Within eleven years of his arrival in Melbourne in 1852, he had established an important colonial shipping company, Anderson & Marshall, and married Mary Austin, the eldest daughter of Thomas Austin Esq of Clifton Villa in Cotham Road. Elected to the Kew Borough Council in 1869, he remained an active member until 1875. During this period, he was elected Mayor of Kew in 1872. A Scottish Protestant by birth and conviction, John Marshall was, with David Beath, a member of the inaugural committee that began planning for a separate Presbyterian Church in Kew, lending the Committee the funds to purchase land on the corner of Cotham Road and Highbury Grove. John Marshall lived at his home, 'Maryfield', at what was then 239 [now 197] Cotham Road until shortly before his death at the age of 70 in January 1903. He was buried on 14 January in Grave 493, Presbyterian Compartment A, Boroondara General Cemetery.Family portrait of an important civic figure in Kew in the 19th century who was also a notable businessman and shipowner in the Colony of Victoria.Albumen Silver photograph on card of Captain John Marshall and family, Mayor of Kew 1872-73.The inscription was added by the family and at one stage modified.
