One page memo, 7th July 1980, from F.B. Taylor to J.O. Reynolds, Western Mining Corporation, re Bendigo Trust Central Deborah Mine. The mine site has an area of 5382 sq metres and is detailed on Mining Lease no 11359 that was held by Cetnral Deborah Gold Mining Company N.L to operate the mine. The Trust would be required to take out a current mining lease from the Department of Minerals and Energy. The Trust would require the consent of Western Mining Corporation to such a lease. File note details a meeting held between WMC and Bendigo Trust regarding the development of the Central Deborah Tourist Mine, where WMC would fund a $5,900 feasibility study to develop the mine as a tourist destination. It notes that there has been confusion re the insistence of WMC that the funding relates only to its purpose as a tourist destination and does not include ore haulage and the stamp battery. Letter discusses the proposal to develop the Central Deborah Gold Mine and the possible involvement of Western Mining Corporation in its setting up. The Bendigo Trust envisages operating the mine as a tourist operation whilst allowing mining at lower levels. 'The existing headframe and winding equipment would be used for productive operations'. Letter from Western Mining Corporation to D.W. Cahill, Barrister, Bendigo dated 1st October, 1980, from J.H. Lalor, Exploration Manager, Minerals, WMC, regarding the objective of the Western Mining Corporation exploration program on the Bendigo goldfield. The major objective is to develop a long term mining operation 'which would be environmentally acceptable' It was considered that the value 'of such an operation to the local community and the Bendigo region would be substantial'. Letter outlines the plan to 'use a commercial elevator rather than a winding system for placing tourists into the underground exhibition'. Western Mining Corporation intended to make a donation to fund this venture but 'the money involved is rather more than we had in mind'. The original quote was $45,000 but is going to be in the range of $200,000 to $300,000. A two page file note on a telephone conversation between Daryl McClure and J.O. It was said in the 'heyday of Bendigo's gold mining it was possible to walk underground from Spring Gully to Eaglehawk' Article describes a walk done in 1988 from the 8th level of the Central Deborah Gold Mine shaft (270 m) through a series of tortuous and at times hazardous drives, stopes, shafts and cross overs to the 8th level of the North Deborah Gold Mine. Steven Hinde, Bendigo Mining's Chief Geologist lead the trek, which proved it was still possible to go down one shaft and emerge up another. Letter and attachment, 21st December, 1983, from Bendigo Mining NL re proposed underground mining exploration Central Deborah, North Deborah and Deborah shafts referencing Town and Country Notice. Bendigo Mining's intention to dewater the Deborah mines and the discharge of same into the Bendigo Sewerage Authority, is discussed. The Town and Country Planning Permit Application attached details the pumping of water, rehabilitation of underground workings and erection of above ground facilities to achieve same. Use of the equipment already available on the site of the Central Deborah will'/ be utilised to pump the water. The Central Deborah gold mine, the last to close on the Bendigo field, was purchased early in 1970m by the Bendigo City Council for restoration and preservation as a typical Bendigo gold mine equipped with machinery , most of which was made in Bendigo. The Central Deborah Company was formed in 1939 to deepen an existing shaft sunk in 1912.
