On 4th August 1978 the construction of the Goonawarra Estate commenced. The estate was formerly known as the Goonawarra Farm and overlooked the Sunbury Township and the Jacksons Creek Valley. Plans for the development included a golf course, houses and community and recreational facilities. The Kaolin Quarry at Bulla supplied Kaolin to the Northcote and Brunswick Pottery Works until it ceased operation at that site in the 1950s. Ticket, Sunbury 73, 1/01/1973

The blue and black printed ticket was issued and used for the 2nd & 3rd days of the 1973 Sunbury Pop Festival. The Festival as held on the property of George Duncan at Diggers Rest on the banks of Jacksons Creek. It was held over the 3 days of the Australia Day Weekend in January. The 'smiley' stamp on the back of the ticket was used as a "passout" check. The tickets were collected by Nicholas Hall who worked as a Security Officer at one of the gates.A blue and black cardboard ticket printed for the 1973 Sunbury Pop Festival. The words Sunbury 73 are in large block letters across the bottom of the ticket and there are four silhouetted figures - 2 male and 2 female. One male is riding a bike and other male is carrying a double bass on his head. The two females are walking. The Nook in Sunbury is situated on a wide and deep bend in Jacksons Creek. Today the area is a popular site for passive recreation with a walking path along the Jacksons Creek. The house on the RHS of the photograph was situated near Powlett Street.Before the Aquatic Centre was built in Sunbury the swimming pool at The Nook was the town's swimming pool for many years. The photograph is of the Jacksons Creek taken in the vicinity of Mill Falls, near the former 'Springvale' winery, which was downstream from the Sunbury township. The mural of the artist's image of early Sunbury was painted on the garage wall of the Sunbury Presbytery. It could be viewed from the former court house garden. The first businesses opened in Sunbury in Macedon Street between Jacksons Creek and Jackson Street. The view in the mural is looking east towards Jacksons Creek.When the railway service reached Sunbury in 1859, the business area then relocated from Macedon Street to the Evans and O'Shanassy Streets precinct. Book, Saltwater River History Trails

This book which was printed in 1984 gives not only the geology of the area but also the history of the various areas that Jacksons Creek and the Saltwater River now known as the Maribyrnong River pass through. There are many drawings and photos accompanying the information relating to the various areas and buildings researched in this book. From Sunbury to Williamstown some of the names and places mentioned include John Aitken, George Evans, William J.T. Clarke, Ben Eadie, Rupertswood, Goonawarra Vineyard, Organ Pipes, Glenara, Walter Clark, Keilor, Overnewton, Avondale Heights, Solomons ford, Riverview Tea Gardens, Anglers Hotel, Aberfeldie Park, Humes Pipe Works, Powder Magazine, Maribyrnong, Munitions factories, Footscray Park, Flemington, Footscray, Yarraville, Newport, Williamstown, Commonwealth reserve, the blue stone lighthouse. A small cream/olive green colour covered printed book of 74 pages. The front cover shows part of a pen and wash drawing of a homestead. It has the name of the book and the author Hugh Anderson printed at the top of the cover and Sunbury to the Sea printed at the bottom. The Jacksons Creek is prone to flooding when rainfall is very heavy. George and Anne Evans settled in Sunbury in 1836 after migrating to Van Diemens Land from Plymouth in 1825. He took upland along the Jacksons Creek and built his Emu Bottom Homestead. He married Anne, who was forty years younger than him on 11 May 1843 and they had six children. He and his wife Anne are buried in Melbourne General Cemetery in Compartment 'H'.George died on 26 August 1876 and Anne died on 12 January 1893. George Evans was a one of the first Europeans to take up land in the the area that was originally known as Buttlejork ( Batterjork) in the area now known as Sunbury. The statue is a bust of George Evans who settled in Sunbury along the Jacksons Creek and built a homestead which he named 'Emu Bottom'. The statue was originally erected on the site in 1986 to commemorate the 150th anniversary of European settlement in the area. A time capsule was buried at the base of the statue and was lifted and opened in 2011 when the 175th anniversary was celebrated. The first building which housed Sunbury State School No.1002 was built on the corner of Macedon and Stawell Streets in the early 1870s and functioned as the local State School until 1912 when a sturdier red brick structure replaced on the same site. In 1999 Sunbury State School was relocated in the former Industrial School heritage buildings in Jacksons Hill. The existing building in Macedon Street was incorporated into the Sunbury Community Health Centre. The school in the photograph is the original Sunbury State School NO. 1002 building, where many early Sunbury residents attended. The Male Hospital in Sunbury was one of the buildings that was within the grounds of the Sunbury Mental Hospital, later known as the Sunbury Asylum, that opened on 1st December 1879 on She-oak Hill ( Jacksons Hill). Patients and staff from the Ballarat Asylum were transferred there. Prior to the establishment of the Asylum, the Sunbury Industrial School occupied the site from 1865. The Sunbury Asylum, later known as Caloola, continued to operate until the 1992.The Sunbury Mental Hospital was an important institution and was the main source of employment for Sunbury residents for 120 years. The swimmers were seated on the diving board over Jacksons Creek at The Nook, which served as a swimming pool in Sunbury until 1966 when the long-awaited for swimming pool was officially opened in Ligar Street on19th January 1966. For a number of years before the official opening townspeople organised many fund raising events to pay for the new pool. The former mill and weir shown in the photograph were sited on the banks of Jacksons Creek downstream from the town of Sunbury. John Eadie, a Scottish immigrant established the water-driven flour mill on the banks of the creek after he arrived in the colony in 1866. The mill continued operating until the outbreak of World War 1 when the metal wheel and iron roofing were taken and used for the war effort. The hill in the back ground with the trees and buildings was the site of the former Sunbury Asylum. The building is the former Sunbury State School 1002, which was relocated to the former Industrial School in Jacksons Hill in 1999. The Federation Style building replaced an earlier school building in 1912 and it is now incorporated into the Sunbury Community Health Centre complex. A school in Sunbury has occupied the site on the corner of Macedon and Stawell Streets from 1870 to 1999.
