Ornaments, 'Carlton Ware' Heron / Egret, c1890 - c1930
Carlton Ware was a famous Stoke-on-Trent based pottery manufacturer. The company was established in 1890 by James Frederick Wiltshaw, William Herbert Robinson and James Alcock Robinson trading under the name of Wiltshaw and Robinson. The trademark "Carlton Ware" was introduced in 1894, and the company's factory was renamed the Carlton Works. Gift from a 1991 "Chinese Transportation Delegation" to Port of Melbourne Authority. Part of a collection of artefacts accumulated by the Port of Melbourne Authority (previously Melbourne Harbour Trust and subsequently Port of Melbourne Corporation) at a time when gifts were exchanged with visiting international maritime delegations.Eastern Han Dynasty Copper Horse gifted by Chinese Transportation Delegation to Port of Melbourne Authority 11/10/91 in printed linen covered box and lined box. Enclosed papers provide history and staff of People's Republic of China in Chinese and English. Attached document describes it as "The Copper Horse, famous both at home and abroad, Was excavated from ..." Labelled "PMA 0204/1-3 ORNAMENT : COPPER HORSE Loc 1/3"Box with chinese writing on two labels. White mark under belly noting 'PMA 0204/1'. Also additional label stating 'PMA 0204/1-3 Ornament: Copper horse Loc 1/3.' -
