A civic campaign for new public offices developed in Kew in the 1880s. After much deliberation, the location chosen was the junction of Bulleen and Cotham Roads. The buildings were designed by George Watson and John Henry Harvey, architects within the Department of Public Works (Victoria). Building was commenced in 1887, and after one year, the buildings were opened. The Post Office was transferred to the new Commonwealth Government in 1901. The Police Station and Court House, sold by the Victorian Government to the City of Boroondara in 2007, are now a community cultural centre and performing arts venue.The buildings were listed on the Victorian Heritage Register Register (HO885) in 1991. Book - Book - Prospectus, Working Men's College, Melbourne, Prospectus, 1899 twelfth edition, 1899
Used at School of Mines Ballarat. The Working Men’s College was founded in 1881 by a prominent grazier and philanthropist, The Hon. Francis Ormond, who donated £5000 towards the establishment of the college. The Council of the Melbourne Trades Hall then matched Ormond's initial donation by rallying its members. On 4 June 1887, the college opened in its purpose-built building on the corners of Bowen Street and La Trobe Street in Melbourne, with a gala ceremony. It became the third official provider of higher education in the new Colony of Victoria (the Melbourne Athenaeum was founded in 1839 and the University of Melbourne in 1853). The college was the predecessor to the current-day Royal Melbourne Institute of Technology (RMIT University). Adjoining the college in the 1890s were the Supreme Court of Victoria (later the Melbourne Magistrates' Court) and the Melbourne Gaol - both which are now part of RMIT today. A list of Scholarship Governors and Life Governors is included. The former have donated 250 Pounds Sterling and upwards, the later have donated 20 Pounds and over but less than 250 Pounds Sterling. The Patron of The Working Men's College was His Excellency The Right Honourable Lord Brassey. The President of the Council was Professor W C Kernot. Isabel Huntington was a painter, craft officer and craft worker. She studied at Ballarat High School, Ballarat Technical Art School (a division of the School of Mines) and RMIT, and was a member of the Victorian Artists' Society and the Contemporary Art Society. In 1945 she was appointed Director of Handcrafts for the Victorian Division of the Red Cross Society. Isabel Huntington had previously held the position of Supervisor of Handcrafts at Heidelberg Military Hospital for three and a half years. She was a member of the Arts and Crafts Society. Isabel Huntington had five 'one-man" shows, three in Melbourne, one in Ballarat and one in Hamilton, Victoria. Ursula Hoff (from the National Gallery Victoria) judged the 1965 Albury awards for watercolour, and religious paintings in oils, awarding the prize to Isabel Huntington. In the same year Isabel Huntington travelled to Europe. After returning from overseas she taught at Rosanna High School, Victoria. Isabel Huntington lived at Montmorency, Victoria, and was there at the time of her death. This painting is one of my key early works incorporating the Baroque dualities of theatrical drama and inner emotional worlds. Interpreting the Baroque subject of the Sacred and the Profane, the swirling diagonal composition of crossed figures, transparent and billowing drapery in contrasting colours and dramatically tense gestures, in this work combine to suggest both religious ecstacy and physical sensuality. The glade is portrayed as white light. It is the open space for the drama. One face gazes ambiguously at the viewer, questioning, whether she is - the willing but (guarded OR mysterious?) seductress the title suggests. Julie Watkins, 2015 Julie WATKINS (1949- ) In 1969 Julie Watkins completed an Associateship Diploma Fine Art-Painting at RMIT, and a Fellowship Diploma of Fine Art-Painting the year after. In 1973 she was awarded a Diploma of Education at Hawthorn State College. Julie Watkins worked as a TAFE teacher from1973 to 1978, then as a tutor for the Faculty of Architecture and the Built Environment at RMIT between 1979 and 1992. Between the years 2003 to 2003 she was a tutor at the University of Melbourne (Victorian College of the Arts. This item is part of the Federation University Art Collection.
