Books - SECV Annual Reports 1920-1948
28 books - SECV Annual Report covering the financial year with Appendices from March 1919 to June 1920 to year ending June 1948. Presented to Parliament pursuant to section 35 (b). The Victorian government owned the electrical company in Victoria supplying electricity for lighting of public buildings, street lighting and electrical trams. Brown coal was the main source of supply. The SECV commenced on 10th January 1921 having earlier been known as the Electricity Commissioners in 1919-1921. The SEC was privatised in the 1990s. The Kiewa Scheme was approved in 1937 but its start was delayed due to WWII. The reports include references to Kiewa Hydro Electric Scheme early on. The papers are a primary source as they were presented to Parliament as true documents and hence valuable for research.Foolscap pages held togeether by 2 or 3 staples at the spine.The cardboard cover is a blue grey with printed black title. Yields information about the views of various letter writers, views of the Courier, union views, rehabilitation costs Geelong, public meetings and meetings with SEC.Set of three Foolscap sheet of plain paper, with rounded corners, with newspaper cuttings, concerning the mooted closure of the Ballarat Tram system 20 Feb and 22 Feb 1962. All from The Courier, unless noted otherwise. 7940.1 1 - "Tram future rests with Government" - 22-2-62 - news report about the SEC being insistent on tabling the motion to close in Parliament, price of replacement trams. Attending Mr K L Murray, Mr Linaker, Mr A V Mawby of the SEC, Cr. A Pittard and Town Clerk Mr. H H Maddern. 2 - "Government "Bought itself out" - continuation from above, quoting Mr Mawby about the rehabilitation of the system in 1934 by the Government, discussions about fares, losses, time of travel from Sebastopol compared to buses. The SEC made this agreement with respect to the operation of tramways in Ballarat and Sebastopol in 1929, though the SEC did not formally take over operation until 1934. See item 7604 for a signed copy of the original agreement. This copy is a retyped version for reference.Yields information about the 1929 agreement between the SEC, The City of Ballaarat and the Borough of Sebastopol about the operation of tramways in Ballarat.Carbon copy of SEC made 26/10/1960 of the "Agreement between the SEC, City of Ballaarat and Borough of Sebastopol" re tramways at the time of the operation transfer of the tramways from ESCo to the SEC. Yields information about the use of the Jelbart road roller by the Ballarat Tramways and the sale of a unit to the City of Ballarat.Set of documents concerning the Ballarat Jelbart Bros road roller that the SEC had purchased. .1 - Photocopy of part copy of a letter between Jelbart Bros and the City of Ballarat, dated 24/7/1923 concerning the purchase of a roller, guarantee and withholding a sum of money. Below the letter is an image of a roller with the name "Ballarat Electrical Tramways" written on it. See AS Box 11 for letter. .2 - Reproduction of a photograph of the roller pre 1936, working on tram track. The roller has the words "Ballarat Electric Tramways" painted on the side of it. The Town Hall has architectural significance as a notable and largely intact example of a late nineteenth century provincial town hall, and as a major public building designed by the prominent Melbourne architect George Johnson. In 1887 the decision was made to build a new Town Hall on vacant land in the Civic Square near the Post Office. The architect was George Johnson, possibly the most prolific designer of municipal buildings in late nineteenth century Victoria. Tenders were called in March 1887, the successful quote being for ₤6454.5.0 by George Clayfield Senior. The foundation stone was laid in June 1887 and the new town hall opened with a grand ball in July 1888. In 1903 a memorial drinking fountain was erected in front of the building. Designed and made by George Daws, a Melbourne monumental mason, it commemorates Gerald Wilkinson, Maryborough's first war casualty, who was killed in action in 1901 during the Boer War. Films were screened at the Town Hall between 1908 and 1967. In 1939 a new entrance foyer for the hall and a Lower Town Hall were constructed, providing much needed public work during the depression. They were built by Steve Hunn for ₤5000, to plans by the Melbourne architect Harry J. Little. Funds were made available by the sale of the Borough electrical supply to the SEC. In 1971 the administrative offices at the front of the building were vacated when new administrative offices were built opposite.
