Black and white negative, by Wal Jack, of S160, east bound in Holden St passing the Holden St Reserve on the corner of Byrne St. The Lygon St destination is shown, which is not correct. Note the bus stop sign on the adjacent pole. Tram is fitted with a headlight mask. It is thought that one end of the tram generally would show St Georges Road and the other Lygon St. Possibly mixed up. Also see other photos of the tram on the same date. Photograph of the opening of the Fitzroy Northcote & Preston Tram on April 1, 1920, by the Melbourne and Metropolitan Tramways Board who had taken over the Trust on 2/2/1920. Shows tram No. 4 being used as one of the opening trams at the Preston depot in Miller St. In the background is St Georges Road. The Trust conducted a trial run using tram No. 1 one week before the Trust was taken over by the MMTB. Reference identifies Miss Alice Membrey cutting the ribbon from the driver’s cab of FNPTT No 4 – opening day at Miller Street, 1 April 1920. Alice Membrey was the daughter of Mr George Membrey, MMTB Board Member.
