Anne Galvin O.B.E. was born Anne Edith Ruby in 1903 and was one of Bendigo's best known charity workers. She used her first speech as Mayoress to indicate her intentions to do something for mothers and children and it was mainly through her efforts as president of the National Council of Women that Bendigo received the appointment of the two first women police officers in 1956 (1). Anne Galvin was the second woman in Bendigo to be elected to the Bendigo City Council in the 1960's, retiring after six years on Council in 1973. Known as an outstanding horse woman and breeder of standardbreds for harness racing. Member numerous sporting clubs and foundation president of the Bendigo Nurses Association. A cascade eflect of gold lame from one shoulder to the hem in front gave graceful movement to the front of the gown, and wing draperies lined with gold lame were shirred to the shoulders of the square neckline. She wore a shoulder spray of golden orchids and carried a bouquet of old gold roses and golden leaves (1). He was associated with the Bendigo and Northern District Base Hospital from 1935 – 1983 including Acting City Medical Officer in 1942 and serving as Medical Officer for 48 years. He was President of the Committee of Management from 1979- 1981. Dr Sandner retired from full time practice as a surgeon in 1971 and was first elected to council in August 1976 and elected Mayor of Bendigo for the 1978 – 79 term. Luke Murphy served as a Councillor from 1902 - 1917 and was elected the 35th Mayor of Bendigo in 1905. The Mayor and Mayoress gave the customary ball at which over 400 guest attended and was regarded as one of the most successful in the municipals history. (p219 Mayors of Bendigo). Organisations such as 'Friendly Societies' were set up to protect and care for their members and communities at a time when there was no welfare state or National Health Service. The aim was and still is, to provide help to members and communities when they need it. The friendly societies are non-profit mutual organisations owned by their members. All income is passed back to the members in the form of services and benefits. The Oddfellows are also fundraisers for local and national charities; lodges raise money for local causes, and the society as a whole raise significant amounts for charities.
