Set of two black and white photographs of scrubber No. 4 at Preston Workshops. Scrubber No. 4 began as PMTT tram No. 96 in 1919, one of 5 tramcars delivered on November 1 1919 (numbers 92-97). A single-truck straight-sill combination tram built by the PMT and James Moore, Melbourne. This design followed conversion of "summer car" 49 (later G class) as a prototype. Tram 96 retained its number when control passed to the MMTB in 1920 and assigned as a K class. Shown as allocated to the Kew depot on 24 March 1928. In June 1929 tram 96 was converted to Scrubber Car 9A (later number 4). In 1934, works trams were re-numbered from their separate "A" suffix series to the same roster as passenger trams, using numbers 1-25 (left vacant by scrapped trams). Scrubber car 9A was renumbered as number 4. Shown as allocated to Hanna St depot on 9 June 1934 as scrubber 4, and also 30 June 1938. In November 1947 Scrubber Car 4 (ex-K class 96) was withdrawn and stored. A limited edition of a book "A History of the Bentleigh East Primary School No. 2083 formerly Bentleigh formerly East Brighton 1878-1978" published to mark the centenary of the Bentleigh East Primary School celebrated from 1 – 5th August 1978. The book was compiled by the Principal Peter Morris and is a collection of incidents, reminiscences and anecdotes arranged in chronological order to capture the character of the differing periods through which the school passed. Mr John Herron and his wife Isa Mary Herron purchased the house at 4 Vickery Street Bentleigh in 1950 from Miss M Marriott. He was a descendant of John James an early settler dairyman in Moorabbin Shire and Miss M Marriott was a descendant of the early settler market gardeners Marriott family. Mr Herron lived there until 1989 and the house was then demolished and turned into a carpark for the busy Shopping precinct of Centre Road, Bentleigh.The Marriott family were early settler market gardeners from 1878 in the area of Dendy’s 1841 Special Survey and John Herron was a descendant of Philip Jones , a chair-maker, who settled in the area of East Brighton, now Bentleigh, in 1852 An original paper receipt, dated 25/6/1950, for solicitors fees regarding the purchase of the house a 4 Vickery Street Bentleigh by Mr John Herron from Miss M Marriott.
